Alex McNally, 88, Rockford's only living Civil war veteran, enlisted in the army of the Tennessee in January, 1863, at the age of 16 and was discharged Aug. 14, 1865 at Madison, Wis. He was a member of company D, 17th Regiment, Wisconsin infantry. The army of the Tennessee was the answer to a telegram from the secretary of war to the governor of Illinois, dated April 19, 1861, requesting the Illinois governor to send four regiments to occupy Cairo, Ill. The militia sent in compliance largely re-enlisted for three years and was reinforced by other regiments. As an army, the army of the Tennessee never suffered a single defeat during four years of war. Every fortification which it assailed surrendered, every force against it was either defeated or destroyed. No officer was ever assigned to command of the army who had afterwards to be relieved from it or to be reduced to another command. Some of the battles in which Mr. McNally engaged were Vicksburg, Nashville, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta, Ga., Brush Mountain, Savannah Ga., Goldsborough and the heavy battle near Richmond, W. Va., which lasted two days and a night and which ended the war. Besides the major battles listed, Mr. McNally engaged in numerous minor battles and skirmishes. Mr. McNally's family consists of five sons, Frank, Robert, Alexander, William and Edward McNally. His wife is dead. Mr. McNally's health is good. He has attended church regularly and has made frequent trips downtown all winter. ~~~~~~~~~~ Death Notice: Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Thursday, December 24, 1935 Alec McNally Dies at Rockford Edw. McNally of this city received word Sunday evening that his brother, Alec McNally, had passed away at his home at Rockford, this state. At the time of his passing Mr. McNally was 90 years of age. For a period after the Civil War the deceased lived in this locality. At one time his hand was badly injured while working near a threshing machine. The accident happened on the farm in Great Oak township now occupied by James Hand. It will be interesting to recall that Mrs. Paul Schaney's grandmother took care of the injured man until a physician could be reached. Those from Emmetsburg who went to Rockford to attend the funeral were Edw. McNally, Mrs. Dick McNally, Mrs. Elmer Frederick, Mrs. Paul Kerber and Wm. McNamara. Funeral services, which were military were conducted from the Catholic church Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment was in the Rockford cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~
