He was born in Virginia on July 27, 1934 to the late Ellett and Gracie Reed Shaver. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Beulah Cumbee Shaver, one brother, William Shaver, one grandchild. Alford worked for and retired from the Town of Blacksburg. He was born in Virginia on July 27, 1934 to the late Ellett and Gracie Reed Shaver. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Beulah Cumbee Shaver, one brother, William Shaver, one grandchild. Alford worked for and retired from the Town of Blacksburg. Alford was a talented self taught musician and was an avid fiddle player. He enjoyed keeping bees and often gifted honey to his friends and family. Alford shared his love of nature and wildlife with his family. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky Lee and Amanda Shaver, of Pembroke, Timmy Lynn Shaver of Tenn.,Terry Wayne and Sharon Shaver, Clintwood, Va., sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Johnny White, of Blacksburg, grandchildren, Brian Shaver, Ashley Gray and husband, Terence, Erica Shaver, Tiara Shaver, Wyatt Shaver, Morgan Shaver, great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Victoria Gray, several nieces and nephews, special friend, Margie Cumbee, of Salem. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 27, 2014 at 11:00 am in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastor Tim Cox and Pastor Jube Burk officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 pm Sunday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home 150 Country Club Dr. SW, Blacksburg. _____________ Man dies in house fire in Blacksburg MONTGOMERY CO., Va. - One person died in a fire Wednesday morning in Montgomery County. The fire was called in around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of Brush Mountain Road. The person who was found dead in the home was inside of the house. Investigators do not believe that the fire was suspicious. The person’s name has not been released. Here is the news release from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office: On October 22, 2014, at approximately 6:20am, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office dispatch center received a 911 call reporting a structure fire in the 300 block of Brush Mountain Road. Blacksburg Fire and Rescue, with assistance from Longshop Fire Department responded to the fire, which was fully engulfed upon the first unit’s arrival. One person was reported to be in the house when fire units arrived on the scene. Firefighters did locate one person, deceased in the residence while fighting the fire. Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office are investigating the fire, but do not believe it to be suspicious. The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s office in Roanoke for further investigation and identification. At this time, no other information will be released. ----------- Sharon Shaver Today we laid to rest my dear father in law. He was a gentle kind man. I have some very fond memories of him and I hope that I can help my children to remember their Papaw Alford and how much he loved them. I hope that Terry and I can help to nurture in them his kindness, his love of animals, & his musical abilities. It was always a pleasure and a special treat hearing him play his fiddle. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace and be playing his special fiddle in heaven.
