Read More	BROWNELL PAIR MURDER NEEVES BENEFACTOR OF THEIR DESERTED BABIES ASSASSINATED BY THEM FAR-FETCHED EXCUSE MADE Lay Concealed on Colfax Farm Till Woman's Step-Father Was Left Alone Wesley Brownell, aged 25, and his wife, Winnie, 17 years old, of Culdesac, Idaho, shot and killed today A. Neeves, step-father of Mrs. Brownell. Neeves was charged by his step-daughter with having maltreated her in Idaho and with having aided others to do so. The shooting took place at the Charles Long ranch near Colfax where Neeves and his wife had come, bringing with them the two Brownell children, aged 15 and 3 months. Brownell and his wife declared they had walked more than a hundred miles in the search of Neeves and had been without food for a day. They hid in the barn at the Long Ranch, waiting for Neeves to appear. The Longs left to visit with neighbors and the Brownells went into the house. They sent the Long children outside and opened fire on Neeves. Brownell, according to a statement the authorities allege he made, fired five shots into Neeves' body, and as her stepfather fell, Mrs. Brownell shot him through the head. Failing to get a telephone connection with the sheriff's office here, Brownell and his wife started on foot to surrender. They were overtaken by officers who had been summoned to the Long home by neighbors. Mrs. Brownell was dressed like a man and her husband had cut her hair. In their statement to the officers, they said they had sworn to complain against a man in Idaho charging him with mistreating Mrs. Brownell and that they had been threatened with death. They left their children with Justice Stewart at Culdesac and fled to the woods and mountains. They returned later and found that their children had been turned over to Mr. Neeves. They were without means and walked to the Long Ranch to which place they learned the children had been taken. The Brownells first appeared in this section last summer, working at a sawmill in Melrose, going to Culdesac about two weeks go where they secured a warrant for the arrest of a Melrose farmer on the charge of criminal assault. The arrest was made and the preliminary examination was commenced. An adjournment was taken to secure other witnessed and during the night Brownell and his wife deserted their children and disappeared from the home of Justice of the Peace Stewart where they had been provided with accommodations. No further proceeding was taken by the Melrose farmer but a warrant for the arrest of the Brownells on the charge of child desertions was secured. It appears they were noticed bout the house until late in the night and along in the morning members of the Stewart family were aroused by the crying of the children. The desertion was then discovered and on a table was a note from the Brownells in which they stated their intention of abandoning the children and hoped they would secure good homes. The investigation instituted by the officials resulted in Mr. Neeves as a relative being advised within a few days he visited Culdesac and took charge of the children which he took to his home near Colfax. Lewiston Tribune September 17, 1912 ===== SIGN CONFESSION BROWN, ALIAS BROWNELL, AND WIFE MAKE DEPOSITION NO REMORSE EXPRESSED Widow Arrives With Little Abandoned Children of Callous Patricides Wesley Brownell and his 17-year old wife made a formal confession today of the shooting of Albert Neeves, father of Mrs. Brownell, and were charged with first-degree murder. Mrs. Brownell gave the names of five Idaho men she alleges assaulted her at the instigation of Neeves, her father. Brownell stated that his real name was George Wesley Brown, but that he adopted the name Brownell when he ran away from home when he was 16 years old. Theses were the developments in the Neeves murder case today; the confessions having been made to Coroner Bruning and County Attorney Pattison. Brownell confesses as follows: "My correct name is George Wesley Brown. I was born in Logansport, Ind. I left home at Croton, Mich., when 16, I left my mother and father, Ben F. Brown because I thought my father mistreated me after I aided him to earn two farms. I changed my name to Brownell and never wrote home. At that time, 10 years ago, four sisters were living - Mrs. William Hill, Mrs. Fred Seward, Mrs. Frank House of Haward City, Mich., and Mrs. Emma Woerner of Fort Wayne, Ind." "I have no regrets for the killing of Neeves and am ready to give my blood if it costs that price. He wronged my wife." Mrs. Bronwell stated she was not sorry in the least that she had fired the final shot that killed her father, and only asked that her children be brought to them until they were given their final sentence. According to the story of Mrs. Brownell she was visited by her father the latter part of July or early in August and at that time he compelled her to maintain unlawful relations with him. Later he brought a German farmer named Jake to her tent and forced her to submit to his assault and afterward James Bailey, George Pankey, Frank Webb, and Young Taylor assaulted her. All of thee parties were residents of the Melrose section and the Brownells claim their flight from the home of W. A. Stewart at Culdesac was due to threats made by persons who feared prosecution on the charges of criminal assault. Mrs. Neeves, the mother of Mrs. Brownell, arrived this evening from Kippen with the two children who will be taken to their parents tomorrow.
