Thursday, November 30, 1944 Alf McAlister Dies Very Suddenly Last Saturday Claresholm suffered the loss of one of its best known and most highly respected citizens by sudden death last Saturday, at noon, in the person of Mr Alfred E McAlister, in his 58th year. Mr McAlister had not been in the best of health for the past six or seven years, but for the most part insisted upon keeping up with his strenuous activities of well drilling. He entered the hospital Thursday and it was found that surgical treatment was necessary. He suffered heart collapse shortly after and died very suddenly. Mr McAlister served eight years on the Town Council and was very generally credited with re-establishing the town's waterworks system on its present profit producing basis. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge and was keenly interested in public affairs. Mr McAlister was born in Tapped, North Dakota, on September 7th, 1887, and came to Claresholm with his parents in 1904. In 1909 he married Miss Marie Larsen. He was a steam engineer by trade and during his first few years here he operated a large steam tractor and helped break up the sod on many a farm here. Then he turned to well drilling, later working in several garages upon the development of the motor car, finally becoming proprietor of the Claresholm Garage, where he carried on for 21 years. After selling out his interests there in 1939 he owned a service in Macleod for two years, then going into well drilling again in 1941, continuing up to the time of his fatal illness. To Mr and Mrs McAlister were born eleven children, ten of whom are surviving, one son, Clarence, passed away in May 1932. The surviving children are: Eve (Mrs Ed Gibbie) of Carmangay Hazel (Mrs Gordon Reeves) of Claresholm Alberta (Mrs Gordon Hayes) of Claresholm Lucille (Mrs Beatty) of Claresholm Vivian in training at the Calgary General Hospital Marguerite in training at the Calgary General Hospital Lorraine at home Bernice at home Irene at home Wayne at home And besides his widow there are two sisters surviving, Mrs Emma Payne of Towner, North Dakota, and Mrs Mae (Addison) Tower of Calgary, and there are three grandchildren.
