Description	:	Alfred G Wright, Washington pioneer family, World War II veteran, passed from this earth on Sunday, March 2, 2008, at the age of 83. Al was born in Ellensburg to La Verne and Ruby Wright on June 3, 1923. He spent his first 13 years living at Cabin Creek as his father worked as a millwright for the sawmill and railroad owned by his great-uncle and grandfather. Read More	Alfred G Wright, Washington pioneer family, World War II veteran, passed from this earth on Sunday, March 2, 2008, at the age of 83. Al was born in Ellensburg to La Verne and Ruby Wright on June 3, 1923. He spent his first 13 years living at Cabin Creek as his father worked as a millwright for the sawmill and railroad owned by his great-uncle and grandfather. This was a tiny community of about 20 log homes, a one-room school and a general store/post office. His early life was full of exploring the woods and fishing all day in the upper Yakima River. His lifetime love of the outdoors grew from this heritage. This community and its buildings still stand today, and Al took great joy re-visiting Cabin Creek. When the Depression hit, the mill closed and went with his parents to Ellensburg. Soon the war boom started, the family moved to Bremerton where Vern worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Upon graduation from Bremerton High in 1941, Al enrolled at the U of Wash. There, he was a member of the UW Crew Team. He later finished at Carnegie Hall Technical Institute. Al is a veteran of WW II who participated in two of the war's major campaigns, the Normandy invasion (D-Day) and the Battle of the Bulge, and was a recipient of various service medals. Al was a sergeant in the US Army at the time of his discharge in 1945. After coming home from Europe he came back to Bremerton, and joined the Bremerton Ski Club. Al married his wife, Evelyn (Person) Wright, May 23, 1947, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Bremerton. Their daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1951 and in 1956, the family was made complete when they were again blessed with the adoption of their son, Douglas. Al and his family moved to follow corporate wishes more than a few times during the following years, including Kennewick, Pasco, South Dakota, Spokane and Marysville, but settled back in Bremerton in 1976. From then on, his energies were focused on helping others in the Bremerton area. Al and Evelyn enjoyed traveling to the Scandinavian countries in 1987, and made several trips back East to reunite with his fellow Army buddies. Also, a memorable trip was made to Hawaii, which included time at the USS Arizona Memorial. Al dearly loved his country and was proud to have served his country in its time of need during World War II. No matter what was needed, Al was always ready to help whether it be putting in a new telephone for an elderly person or helping patch a roof. He especially enjoyed helping at Our Saviour's, recording services and helping with Wednesday night meals for the less fortunate. During his life, Al was always involved in community service, including membership of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church since 1941, Telephone Pioneers, Spokane School Board, Rotary in Kennewick, Kiwanis president and helping any person that needed something done. Al was preceded in death by their daughter, Rebecca in 1996; and his brother, Ted Wright in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of 60 years; and son, Douglas and wife, Corrine, of Yakima; grandsons, Karl and Peter; and the hundreds of people he touched. Al will always be remembered for his compassion and friendship, his big hugs and warm smile, and always a good Norwegian joke to tell. Memorial services are scheduled for Friday, March 7, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Lewis Funeral Chapel
