Description	:	Alfred married George Ann Wellman on June 4, 1879, Wapello County, Iowa. George Ann was also known as Georgiana. In the 1900 Census for Ottumwa, Alfred and Georgiana are shown with three sons, Herman Raymond, and Basie. Basie's name has been incorrectly transcribed in ancestry.com indexing as Rosie. In looking at other records, his full name was actually Basil Victor Marts. Alfred's sons Herman and Basil are found in the 1910 Census for Portland, Oregon, living with their step-father and mother, George H. and Georgina Davis. Alfred, widowed, is found in the 1920 Census for Ottumwa, living with his sister, Ellen Halloway. There were a number of articles in the Ottumwa Daily Couriers about Mr. Marts' death. He was found dead in his second floor room at 302½ Church Street, having been hit over the head with a small sledge hammer. According to an article in the "Ottumwa Daily Courier," March 21, 1932, Mr. Marts was survived by two sons, Basil Marts and Herman Marts of Portland, Oregon; by one brother, Monroe Marts of Ottumwa; and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Pixley of Ottumwa and Mrs. Carrie Harsh of Long Beach, Calif. The article also stated that his wife preceded him in death. Alfred's death certificate may be seen in both familysearch.org and ancestry.com.
