Fred La Brec, one of the earliest pioneers of this county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. V. E. West, at Egan, late last night. Arraingements have not yet been made for the funeral services which will be held in Madison. Fred LaBrec was born on March 19, 1850 at Harvard, Ill., twenty-two years later he moved to Fillmore County, Minn., where he married Sarah Sample, who died here two months ago. In 1878, he moved to Madison, and took up a homestead on what is now the site of Greenwood Cemetery. Three years later he bought a meat market in the then sparsley settled village of Madison, and conducted that business for two years. As more and more people were attracted to this section of the country, building became active, and Mr. La Brec took up the carpenter trade which he continued to follow from that time. He was one of the sturdy, rugged type that has marked the development of South Dakota from its early struggles to its present ear of comparative prosperity. Like others of his time re [sic] realized the value of forming real friendshipas in order to work through common hardships. This he found easy to do because of an attractive personality, and a straightforward and sincere manner of dealing with his fellow men. Besides his daughter, Mrs. V. E. West, Mr. LaBrec is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Ellda [sic] Pierce of Huron, and three sons, Joe LaBrec, of this city, John LaBrec, of Des Moines, Ia., and Wilbur LaBrec, present address unknown. He also leaves two brothers and a sister, at his old home, Harvard, Ill. Published in the Madison Daily Leader, Sept. 16, 1922, last page.
