WRIGHT, a successful business man of Ellensburg, has the honor of having built with his brother, the first saw mill erected in this city. Born in New York City, March 22, 1864, he was the son of EZRA W. WRIGHT, who operated a saw mill on Staten Island and one in central New York. Of French descent, the father was born in Herkimer county, New York. in 1827. Being in ill health he came west and settled in Kittitas county, Washington in the hope of improvement, dying here in 1891. Two brothers of EZRA W. WRIGHT gave up their lives in the cause of the Civil War, one of who, serving as aid on the staff of Gen. Sherman, was killed in the Shenandoah Valley. The mother of ALFRED M. WRIGHT, EMMA CUTTRELL, of Scotch - English ancestry, was born in Jersey City, 1829 and died in 1873. Her father was proprietor of a shipyard in her native city, where members of her family even now continue to build ships. The boy ALFRED grew up in the Empire state, working in his father's mill until reaching the age of twelve, when he removed with his father to a farm. Here he worked for two years, when he left his country home to learn the machinist's trade. In 1883, he sought health in Dakota, where for three years he followed his trade, at the end of which time he came to Ellensburg entering at first into carpentering and contracting work. the year 1892, found him with his brother WILLIAM, engaged in the lumber milling business, in which success has rewarded their efforts. At the present time they jointly own two mills, one in Cle Elum and one in Teanaway, together with a half interest in a third. Mr. WRIGHT was married, June 21, 1886 in New York state to Miss BERTHA R. GEORGIA, an old school mate, a native of Otsego, New York. Being a woman of finished education before her marriage, she was engaged in teaching. Her father, ORRIN, and her mother, SUSAN (MURRAY) GEORGIA, both were born in the state of New York where she has three brothers and three sisters now living. The father died some years ago. Mr. WRIGHT was a member of a family of seven, three sisters and one brother, EZRA H., being dead. Of his two surviving brothers, FRANK C. WRIGHT is living in California and WILLIAM, Mr. WRIGHT's business partner, makes Ellensburg his home. To Mr. and Mrs. WRIGHT six children have been born: NELLIE, DORIS, CHARLOTTE, LUVERN, ACENITH and ALFRED. By the death of Mrs. WRIGHT, September 30, 1901, this family of growing children were left motherless and since that time have been cared for solely by the father. Though the subject was in Ellensburg at the time of the great fire, he was fortunate enough to escape with little loss. Mr. WRIGHT has even taken interest in the affairs of his city, and served eight years as a member of its council. He is a wide-awake Republican seldom being absent from a caucus or a convention of his chosen party." OBITUARY: The Ellensburg Capital, March 24, 1933 "One of Ellensburg's most respected citizens and beloved pioneers, A. M. Wright. died suddenly yesterday afternoon at his home on North Water Street. Mr. Wright had been a resident of this community for 47 years and was renowned as a great community worker and public - spirited citizen. He came to this valley when 22 years of age in the year 1886 and a year later returned to New York City from whence he came and married. He and his bride returned to the Kittitas Valley and Mr. Wright and his brother started the first lumber mill here. Later Mr. Wright built and constructed one of the first automobiles in this county in 1906. He served on the city council for a number of terms and while a member of the councilmanic body together with Andrew Olson financed the present light plant and power ditch. He was also instrumental in drilling the first city well and installing the first water system on the Sander's ranch. Mr. Wright was a renowned gunsmith and within the past year had fulfilled a life - long ambition, making piece by piece by hand a muzzle loading rifle of pioneer times. He was prominent in organizing the local rifle club and one of the most coveted trophies bears his name. Mr. Wright as a great lover of wild life and sponsored and fought for their propagation. He prepared the first Chinese pheasants and Hungarians in the valley and served a term as game commissioner. He served as county commissioner for two terms and was active in securing good roads. He was one day over 69 years of age at the time of his death. Besides his widow he is survived by seven children, four daughters and three sons. These are Nellie Burnett, Mrs. Doris Zastrow, Mrs. Charlotte Maryatt, all of Seattle, Mrs. Charles Kilgore, San Francisco; L. H. Wright and Alfred Wright of Easton and John Wright of Seattle. Funeral services will be held at three o'clock Sunday afternoon with interment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Rev. Harry L. Bell will conduct the services."
