Nye was born in Fairfield, Me., and was a member of the United States signal corps from Wisconsin during the civil war. It was he who sent the famous message from General Sherman, at Kenesaw Mountain, to General Corse at Altoona Pass, "Hold the fort, for I am coming!" In 1856 he removed to Platteville, Wis., and married, March 14, 1861, Anne Sophia, daughter of Selden and Ann James (Lowe) Quinby. He served in the U. W. Signal Corps, from February 24, 1864, to August 19, 1865. In 1883 he removed to Lexington, Nebraska, where he now resides." Eight children noted: 1. Thirza Ann, b. Dec. 11, 1862; m.
