Shadows are lengthening on the office floor. The linotype is silent, the press has ceased its clanking noise, the office force are through with the day's work and have gone home and all is quiet in the office of the Register. Sitting before the editor's desk in the chair once occupied by his giant form, we try to compose some tribute of affection to Alfred Pont who for 18 years has been the genius of this newspaper. It is a lonely place. Every pencil and scrap of paper and the tools of his profession so recently dropped from his busy hands remind us of our loss. His spirit seems to hover over us as we write. For weeks he was not well but with grim determination he held to his work in spite of aching body and weary brain. His friends urged him to give up and go home to rest but someone had to do the work and he felt that he must stay at his post. But the early part of last week the inexorable blow of typhoid fever laid him low. Even in his delirium he struggled with his nurses to leave the bed that he might go down to the office. His suffering increased as the infection spread through his body until between two and three o'clock on Tuesday morning. Death gently closed his eyes in that sleep that knows no earthly waking. Full of life, vigor and virile manhood, with his powerful physique, just at the prime of life, when he had most to live for, he was the last man in town that one would associate with the thought of death. When business men came down to their work on Tuesday morning the intelligence that Al Pont was dead was received with a shock. There was universal grief. Men gathered in clusters on the sidewalk and expressed their sorrow and each one had some kind thing to say about him. The boys especially loved him. With choking voice and eyes brimming with tears, Grant McFarland, who learned "the trade" with him expressed the sentiment of many a boy in Stanton, when he said "He was like a father to me." His office was the rendezvous of all the boys in town and he had a magical influence with them. He was never too busy to listen to their troubles and to give them good advice. His office door was never locked and after supper the boys would congregate to talk baseball and make plans for the future. His heart was as big as his body and it was a common sight to see him coming down the street, his car loaded to the "guards" with happy youngsters. He was the boy's friend and they knew it and were ever loyal to him. He never lost the heart and disposition of a boy. When the boys grew to manhood they still remembered the camping parties and fishing excursions that they had enjoyed with him. His hobby was baseball. For years he managed the Stanton baseball club and financed it often at a great sacrifice of time and money. He was known over the state as an ardent supporter of the National game. He was morally clean himself and stood valiantly for civic righteousness. He was the champoin of right and the challenger of wrong. He believed in Woman's Suffrage. He was an enthusiastic temperance advocate. He was outspoken in expressing his views on all reforms. Courageous as a lion, he was afraid of no man and nothing made him more angry than to have one insinuate that his championship of moral issues would cause him to suffer financially. Money was always a secondary consideration with him, the truth was his ideal. In his death the cause of civic righteousness has lost an invaluable leader. Personally, he was a companionable man. Gentle in all his dealings, patient under criticism, in all his relations with his fellows he had malice toward none and charity for all. None ever heard him speak an unkind word about any person even though that person differed with him politically or otherwise. He was aprince of optimists and at times was even visionary but usually his visions were a prophesy of better things. He stood for every progressive movement. He was one of the first to promote the project of a new high school building. He was the first man to urge the installationof the sewer system. For man years he was Master Workman of the A. O. U. W. lodge. Twice he was secretary of the Stanton County Fair Association. In politics he was a democrat and was influential in the councils of the state. He had a reputation for his shrewdness in political prognostications. When his friends urged him to run for mayor of the city of Stanton some thought that his prominence as a temperance worker would defeat him but he was elected and seved for two terms in office with credit to himself and satisfaction to the city. While serving in the capacity of mayor he installed the new machinery in the electric light and water plant and put it on a paying basis. As a citizen we shall miss him as we would no other man. His kindness, so pervading, so persistent, smoothed every path and removed every obstacle. Al Pont has crossed the River to receive the reward which the Ruler of the Universe has ordained for the true and faithful. The funeral services were held in the Congregational church at 2:30 yesterday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. J. Klopp assisted by Rev. John F. Poucher. The pallbearers were G. A. Eberly, W. H. Hyland, H. F. Mileinz, Charles McLeod, Roy Hopper and Al Marks. Interrment was in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery. It was one of the largest attended funerals in the history of the city. Many out of town people were present." Obituary "Alfred Pont was born July 28, 1866, at Annawan, Illinois, and died at his home at Stanton, April 20, 1915. He lived in Illinois until March 1872, when he came to Nebraska with his parents. They first settled in Dodge county where they resided one year and then moved to Colfax county in 1878. He attended the country schools and later went to Fremont college, in which institution he graduated. He taught in a country school four years and entered the newspaper business at Howells where he resided one year. He was married to Miss Kitty Mitchell at Schuyler, October 24, 1895. To them three children were born, Fred, Dewey and Edith. Fred died in 1898, the other two and his wife survive him. He came to Stanton eighteen years ago and purchased the Stanton Register and has made this his home continuously since that time. Besides his wife and children he leaves one brother, William Pont, who lives at Hay Springs, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Sobota of Brainard, and his aged mother who lives at Howells."
