Kuriger, 93, of Monticello, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello, with the Rev. Keith Birch officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monticello, where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. He was born on May 3, 1916, in Muscatine, son of Henry and Lucy Rohrbach Kuriger. He received his education at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Monticello. Alfred enlisted in the Navy in 1937. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington four of his seven years in the Navy. He was stationed in Savannah, Ga., during the later part of his military service. There he met and married Margaret Down; she preceded him in death. After completion of his time in the Navy, he returned to Monticello and worked for Kuriger Brothers Plumbing. They returned to Savannah, where he operated a service station for a brief period and then began a long career as a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service. He later married Gladys Denmark on June 19, 1982, in Savannah; she preceded him in death in 2001. Alfred returned to Monticello in March of 2007, where he resided at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center until his death. He was a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Alfred enjoyed playing bridge, loved music, had a pilot's license and built two airplanes in his spare time. Although he was not blessed with his own children, they always held a special place in his heart. Surviving are his brother-in-law, Kenneth Schwendinger, of Monticello; and many nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Ralph, Karl, Louis, Clarence, Bernard, Norbert and Lawrence; and three sisters, Mildred Berry, Genevieve Muller and Rosalene Schwendinger.
