Alfred Thomas Mohn was born August 28, 1928, to Ole and Guri (Breiset) Mohn in Moorhead, Iowa. He was born with that infectious smile everyone knows, a kind heart and with classic storyteller abilities. He was the last born into the family. He had a difficult childhood as his mother died when he was just six years old and he was raised to be a hard worker. He was raised in the Moorhead and Woodbine areas. He attended many country schools in Harrison County as well as Woodbine Public School. He provided military service for his country as it was his responsibility even though it conflicted greatly with his kind hearted spirit. He graciously accepted all of the medals he was awarded including two purple hearts. His memories brought him pride but also extreme heart break over his job while serving our country. Alfred met Ruth Carson at the Pisgah Café and they were married July 10, 1953. They farmed near the Allen Creek Chapel. Their union brought three daughters. Alfred also did welding and installed grain bins as well as being the best jack of all trades. He was gifted with being able to fix things on his own. He farmed beans, corn, alfalfa and raised cattle. He was a hard worker like most farmers. He was also a gifted carpenter and built the farm house. He retired around 1981 when they moved to town. He truly enjoyed walking, having coffee with his friends, his favorite meal of blackened salmon and ice cream any time of the day. Alfred moved to Billings, MT August 2014, where he enjoyed his new adventure of things to see/do with his daughter, son-in-law and their pets. Alfred was a kind soul who loved pets and they loved him. Dad thought the world of his son-in-law and dad said numerous times that Michael was like a father to him (as he helped take care of him). Alfred died on February 17, 2020, at his assisted living home in Billings, MT, with his daughter and son-in-law at his side at the age of 91. He was loved by everyone he met and those that provided care for him. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth Mohn; daughter, Marlys Mohn; five brothers, Harold, Floyd, Walt, Clarence, and Kenneth; and two sisters, Evelyn McGee and Clara Renz. He is survived by his two daughters, Pauline Schneider of Charter Oak, Iowa, and Loretta and her husband Michael Wright of Billings, Montana; three grandsons, Jeremy, Brad and David Homolka; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Jake, Hayley, Gauge, Mallorie, Kaden, Kandice, Braxton and Calvin; three four-legged grandkids, Koda, Miki and Moka Wright; sister-in-law, Carol Mohn of Omaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Bill Carson of Chadwick, Missouri; and many other relatives and friends. Family was important to dad and he looked forward to attending all of the family reunions so he could see all of his nieces/nephews and extended family.
