Memorials may be designated to Grinnell Regional Hospice or to Windsor Manor. Alfred Vernon Steen was born the son of Aaron and Aletha Marie (Robinson) Steen on Sept. 2, 1918, in Ringsted. He graduated from Searsboro High School with the class of 1938. He was united in marriage to Paula Louise Johnson by the Rev. Myrtle C. Lee on Feb. 14, 1940, in Searsboro. Together they farmed near South Amana, Guernsey, Grinnell, and then in the Searsboro area for 20 years. He was a life-long member of the Searsboro Community Friends Church. His other memberships included the World Gospel Mission and the Iowa Holiness Association. Alfred's family, friends, and faith in God were his life. He was a simple man who had a passion for farming the land. He was known for his humor and being the king of silly songs. He also held a passion for cars, especially cars with accents of chrome. He held a special love for music and he taught himself how to play the violin and guitar. His enjoyments included singing, fishing, traveling and sightseeing, and playing the card game, Rook. His spirit lives on through his children, Karen (Tom) Tish of Leavenworth, Kan., Dianne (Roy) James of Lynnville, and Larry (Julie) Steen of Webster; 12 grandchildren, Tony (Lori) Tish, Tom II ( Dessira) Tish, Teri Tish, Melissa (Mark) Doll, Melanie (Jim) Stielow, Monica (Terry) Cullen, Marty James, Matt (Lisa) James, Jack (Christina) Steen, Jordon Steen, Jessika Steen and Jennifer Steen; 25 great grandchildren; his brother, Donald Dillon of Cedar Rapids; and his sister-in-law, Cornelia Johnson of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Paula on June 2, 1999; and his siblings, William Steen, Hazel Miller, Robert Steen, Raymond Dillon, Earl Dillon, and Alvin Steen.
