Read More	Fremont Herald (Fremont, Nebraska) · 26 Nov 1925, Thu · Page 6 (Obituary submitted by wonderful Findagrave volunteer Bryan Vanshur) Promised to Become Great Still another Fremont boy who, though not famous, made a remarkable record in the world and had the promise of fame ahead, if his young life had not been cut short, was Alfred Willoughby Fowler, sone of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Fowler. This bright young man was born here and graduated from the Fremont High School in June, 1911. He studied first at the University of Chicago, won an honor scholarship there at the end of his first years an in 1913 entered Yale University, from which he graduated in June, 1916, and was one of two members of the class chosen for the foreign service training of the National City Bank of New York. Completing the training course, Mr. Fowler was sent to the Genoa, Italy branch of the City National and was there when the World War was on. In 1918 he secured release from his bank and enlisted in the French Foreign Legion at Paris and was commissioned lieutenant. He served until April, 1920, when he was discharged on account of illness, resumed his bank position at Genoa and rose to the position of manager of the discount and credit department. Shortly afterward he contracted influenza and died June 5, 1920. Mr. Fowler spoke and wrote fluently English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. Mr. F.C. Schwedtman, vice president of the National City bank, at the time of the young man's untimely passing, said: "Mr. Fowler was destined to be a great man had he lived. I would give every dollar I have, for his talent as an economist and linguist." Obituary: Omaha World Herald, Page 2, July 26, 1920 Fremont, Neb., July 25. Funeral services were held today over the body of Alfred W. Fowler, who died in Genoa, Italy, June 5, and who served during the war as a lieutenant of artillery with the French Foreign Legion. The Rev. W.H. Buss conducted services at the home of a sister, but at the grave the American Legion ritual was followed with the chaplain of the local post, the Rev. J.C. Peterson in charge. Alfred Fowler was the only son Mr. and Mrs. Will S. Fowler. He had been graduated with honors from Yale University, in 1916, entering the Genoa branch of the National City Bank of New York. A year later when America entered the World War he enlisted in the Foreign Legion and was promoted to lieutenant and served on the Vosges front. Influenza, contracted while he was in the army, left him in a weakened condition so that he succumbed to the attack of typhoid after his return to the bank at Genoa. Alfred Fowler, a Fremont boy who is attending Yale University, won the Learned Scholarship in a class of 400. The prize will help out materially in the boy's remaining in Yale. He arrived home yesterday, at the expiration of his first year. Though he has wealthy relatives who have offered to pay his school expenses, young Fowler has chosen to earn his way through Yale. He has been able to meet all of his expenses so far.
