She grew up and attended schools in Ellis. She also attended Fort Hays State College and graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia. She was born Oct 24, 1911, in Salina to Harry A Bartell and Ethel Bisby Bartell. She grew up and attended schools in Ellis. She also attended Fort Hays State College and graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia. She received her masters degree from Emporia State University. She married Jack K Balcombe on Oct 10, 1941 in Ellis. They lived in Kansas until 1968, when the family moved to Anaconda, Mont. She lived in Anaconda until 1995, when she moved to Ogen, Utah. She taught high school science and foreign language in both communities, retiring in 1976. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Ellis, and the First Presbyterian Church, Anaconda. She was active in the Presbyterian Church teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir and serving as a deacon and elder. She was an active community member, serving on the school board in both Ellis and Anaconda. She was a member of Eastern Star Eureka Chapter 16, Job's Daughters Bethel No 8, Anaconda, and grand guardian of Montana in 1978. She was also a member of the Anaconda Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and active in Hospice. She is survived by two sons, Jack K Jr, Lorimor, Iowa, and Douglas H, Kansas City, Mo., a daughter, D Joan Balcombe, Ogden, Utah; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preced in death by her husband in 1984 and a sister. Graveside services will be Saturday, Sept 19 at 4 pm at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends are welcome to attend and may call after at the hoe of Sally Ward. Memorials may be given to the Ellis Public Library or the Congregational Church Restoration Fund.
