ALICE FRANCE PASSES The Lamoni Chronicle, Lamoni, IA, 6/8/1922, pg8 Alice Carter was born at Pemberton, Wigan, Lancashire, England, the 7th of December, 1834. She was the youngest of thirteen children and the only member of her family to join the church. But despite their advice and wishes to the contrary on the 4th of November, 1848, at the comparative early age of fourteen she was baptized. She continued a devoted attendant, walking as a rule twenty miles every Sunday in order to attend services and help with the singing; for in her younger days she was quite a noted singer. On the 28th of October, 1865, she was married to Thomas France at Hirley, England, and with him came to this country in 1859, their second child being born on shipboard during some very rough weather. They proceeded at once to Florence, near Omaha, Nebraska, as their intention was to go to Utah, and in fact they had already contributed toward the building of the temple at Salt Lake City, as well as paid their tithing for several years. But friends from England who had preceded them to Utah, came back and told them of conditions. It was indeed a day of darkness. She had given up her family for the church. She had left her native land for the same reason. Often she has related how she sat upstairs in their room and looked out into the darkness and cried all night, thinking there was nothing to live for now the church had gone wrong. What she suffered then only those who had to pass through that dark day can realize. After about one year they moved to Kewanee, Illinois, which remained their home for the next twenty-six years, and where the remainder of their children, were born. She and her husband were here baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on April 27, 1867. In 1886 they removed to Lamoni where the family home has been ever since, where they raised their children to manhood and womanhood, where their children were married and have in turn made their home in Lamoni and vicinity. In Lamoni, they purchased a farm of about one hundred acres on South State Street, which was cultivated principally by their sons William and Charles with the assistance of their father. Mr. and Mrs. France engaged in the nursery business and also as florists. Most of the trees in and around Lamoni were planted by Mr. France. He donated and set out all of the tree in Graceland addition. He also supplied cut flowers for weddings, commencement and other public occasions, and cultivated and sold many plants. They and their family have always taken a great interest in the community of Lamoni and in its business development. After that the building was used as a double store, the rooms above being rented for various purposes. On July 3, 1900, Thomas France passed away very suddenly at their home in Lamoni. Mrs. France, however, continued the business until about 1905 and many in the neighboring towns still speak of the plants they secured from her. Of their eight children, three, namely, Alfred, Thomas, and Martha, passed away in childhood. Of the remaining five, Mrs. J. E. Stanley resides at Andover, Missouri. The remaining four, Mrs. Margaret Turnbull, Mrs. A. M. Chase, Will A. France and Charles France are all of Lamoni, Iowa. In addition to these five children she leaves to mourn her eighteen grand children, twenty-two great-grand children, as well as those related to her by marriage and her many friends. She was a great lover of flowers and furnished them regularly and often for others. Her passing away on June 2, 1922, came when the year brings its richest floral offerings, so others could show their appreciation in fuller measure. As she was in her eighty-eighth year she felt her work here was finished and it was her wish that she be permitted to go home.
