Alice was born on August 14, 1911 in Dodge Township, Boone County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Dorothea (Schmidt) Longhenry. She attended country school in Dodge Township. Murken, age 98, of Boone, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. Alice was born on August 14, 1911 in Dodge Township, Boone County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Dorothea (Schmidt) Longhenry. She attended country school in Dodge Township. Alice married John Carl Murken, Feb. 24, 1932 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Parsonage. She was a lifelong resident of the Boone County area. She and her husband farmed in Dodge Township for many years and she was also a homemaker. She was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church of N.E. Boone County. Alice raised a garden every year, with her last one in 2009, she also enjoyed baking, using different spices she grew, especially parsley. Alice is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her three brothers, Arthur, Walter, and Raymond; her two sisters, Florence and Lillian; her son, Norman; her daughter-in-law, Raelene Murken. Alice is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy Kruse and husband, Raymond of Ogden; Helen Jean Sheesley and husband, Wade of Stanhope; her son, Richard J. Murken of Fort Dodge; her 11 grandchildren; her 15 great-grandchildren and her seven great-great grandchildren. Alice is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Stacie Murken of Park Hills, Mo.; her brother-in-law, Herbert H. Murken of Canby, Minn. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 281 Spruce Lane, Boone, Iowa (N.E. Boone County). Rev. Michael R. Standfest will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, next to the church. Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 1, at the Walter-Schroeder Funeral Home, Fifth & Story Streets in Boone from 2 to 8 p.m., family will be present at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., visitation will continue on Saturday at the church from 8:30 a.m. to the time of service. Memorials have been established to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran Church of Boone Radio Ministry or the Lutheran Hour. Walter-Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone is in charge of the arrangements.
