Van Wyhe Victim of Strange Accident Mrs. Bryan Van Wyhe of near Ireton died Sunday from injuries received in a strange accident Sunday 1 mile west and one half mile south of Ireton. Although two cars and a pick-up truck were involved, Mrs. Van Wyhe was not in any of them, yet she became Sioux County's first automobile fatality of the year. Mr. and Mrs. Van Wyhe and two children, including a 16-months old baby, were driving a Chevrolet pick-up and had driven into the Vander Pol farm driveway for the purpose of turning around. In backing out of the driveway, as the accident was outlined for a Democrat reporter by sheriff Harry Dykstra and patrolman George Dunn, the truck began to slip on the ice, sliding toward the ditch on the down-hill incline. When Mr. Van Wyhe stopped the truck with the intention of putting on chains the back end was part way in the road. Mrs. Van wyhe had gotten out and gone behind the truck, possibly to brace the rear ends so it would not slice into the ditch. At the same time Clarence Mulder and family of the Ireton neighborhood drove up and offered help, which Mr. Van Wyhe declined. Mr. Mulder then backed the his car across the road to turn back when [.] 1949 Ford drove over the crest of the little hill and found the road obstructed. There was not time to stop and he attempted to drive between the Mulder car, then broadside of the road, and the rear of the truck. The front end of the [.] car hit the fender of the truck and Mrs. Van Wyhe was apparently struck in the chest by the corner of the truck. She was trown into the ditch but got up and walked to the road before she collapsed. She was taken to the doctor at Ireton by Mr. Mulder, then rushed to Hawarden hospital immediatel, suffering from internal injuries. She died just as they reached the hospital. The Ford car in the meantime had spun around on the ice and landed in the ditch. A damaged front fender on the truck was the extent of the car damages. The Van wyhes lives two miles west and a quarter mile south of the scene of the accident, according to sheriff Dykstra, who, with patrolman Dunn investigated the accident. Mrs. Van Wyhe was 39 years old and mother of six children, ranging from 19 years to 16 mo. in age: William with the Air Force at Topeka, Kan.; Philip, Marcia, attending business school in Sioux City; Jewell, Karen and David, all at home. Also surviving are six brothres and five sisters; Peter Ganzeveld, Wisc.; Wm. Ganzeveld, Detroit, Mich.; Henry of Kalamazoo and John of Clarksville, Mich.; George of Goldfield, Iowa; Mrs. L. Becker, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mrs. E. Lockhorst, Pipestone, Minn.; Mrs. Peter Van Wyhe, Ireton; Mrs. P. Roberts, Bellflower, Cal.; Mrs. P. Delimeier, Grand Rapids Mrs. Melvin Sanderson, Hawarden. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the home and Ireton Christian Ref. church. Mrs. Gerrit Beltman of Alton is a cousin of Mr. Wyhe and expects to attend the funeral with Mr. Beltman. They called at the Van Wyhe home Monday. Alton Democrat 1953-01-08.
