Description	:	Alice H. Olson – age 91, of Laurens, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016 at her home in Laurens, Iowa. Alice Henrietta Arends was born October 19, 1924 in Little Rock, Iowa. She was the daughter of George and Christina (Johnson) Arends. She was the second of six children. Her younger sister Louise died at nine years of age. Read More	Alice H. Olson – age 91, of Laurens, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016 at her home in Laurens, Iowa. Alice Henrietta Arends was born October 19, 1924 in Little Rock, Iowa. She was the daughter of George and Christina (Johnson) Arends. She was the second of six children. Her younger sister Louise died at nine years of age. Alice attended school in Little Rock, graduating in 1942. During high school, she worked at the town café. After high school, she worked at the Joy Lunch Café in Rock Rapids off and on for eight years. Alice took a couple of breaks going to Los Angeles working at a café at the end the street car line. She returned to the Joy Lunch Café in Rock Rapids. Her second trip to L.A. had her working as a waitress at the Pig and Whistle. Being a small town girl, she returned to Rock Rapids, where she met Laverne “Ole” Olson. He was building a church in Rock Rapids and the crew ate at the restaurant. In 1950, Alice and Ole married. With four children, she followed Ole’s jobs until 1958 where they bought a home in Laurens. In 1959, their fifth child was born. Later, Alice went back to work as a waitress. First worked at Sheets Café, then at Hake’s Café until 1970, when Hake’s hired her to work in the IBM Room where she stayed until retiring in 1985. Ole also retired in 1985 and they were able to take several vacations to see some of the amazing places in the states. Ole and Alice also took trips to visit family in Arkansas and Las Vegas. In 1999, Alice’s grandson, David died in a car accident. Ole passed away on August 31, 2004. In 2007, Alice’s son David fell ill and he passed away on August 31, 2007. Survivors include her daughters, Paula Olson of Laurens; Susan (Greg) Essick of Spencer, Bonnie Olson of Laurens and Kristie (Mark) Goodlin of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Christopher & Carissa Essick; five great-grandchildren, Cameron & Jaida Essick and Cody, Tanner & Trey Weier; brothers, Hank Arends of Sioux Falls, SD and Tony Arends of Trinity, FL and sister, Matilda Fischer of Sheldon. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Louise; husband, Ole; son, David and grandson, David Weier. Funeral Monday March 21, 2016, 10:30 AM at First Christian Church, Laurens, IA Visitation Sunday March 20, 2016, 4-6 P.M. at Powers Funeral Home, Laurens, Iowa
