She made the world a better place for 86 blessed and wonderful years. Born Alice Johanna Mutschelknaus January 2, 1922, on her parents' farm in Lesterville, SD, the youngest child of Albert and Katie (Weidenbach) Mutschelknaus. Born Alice Johanna Mutschelknaus January 2, 1922, on her parents' farm in Lesterville, SD, the youngest child of Albert and Katie (Weidenbach) Mutschelknaus. She was baptized in Christ February 26, 1922, at Petersburg Church. Alice was fortunate to have been loved by three husbands, each of whom found peace and happiness with her. On July 23, 1942, she married Herbert F. Schmidt, who died in 1971. On November 22, 1975, she married Vernon R. Anderson of Austin, MN, who died in 1986. On September 2, 1988, she married William "Bill" Braunesreither of Yankton, SD, who died in March 2008. Alice was the wisest among us despite only an eighth-grade education. She gave the greatest advice, but was not a counselor. She was our moral compass, though not a minister. And while she was not a physician, her arms could heal as those of only a mother and grandmother could. Some of Alice's fondest memories were from her years as a waitress at the Westwood Restaurant in Rapid City, SD, where the patrons loved her. She moved to Austin, MN, in 1975, then to Yankton, SD, in 1980, where she was a dedicated volunteer with her church and hospital, and enjoyed playing cards and socializing with friends and family. She regularly danced away her Saturday nights at the VFW, and served as president and vice president of Ruth Circle at St. John's Church. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and Go Getters Extension Club. She and her husband, Bill, moved to Indianola, IA, in the winter of 2006 to be closer to family. Alice's marriage to Herb produced a daughter, Luana Lou Shull of Indianola, who, together with husband Dennis Shull, gave Alice two granddaughters, Jan Shull (Shannon Stafford) and K.D. Shull, and two great-grandchildren, Sophie and Quinn Stafford who survive her. Alice is also survived by her sister Florence Weber. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Mathilda Mehrer, and brothers Oscar and Morris Mutschelknaus. Alice made the best pickles, sugar cookies, and fried bread in the whole world. Christmas was a wonderful time for her family, as she showered them with tubs and tins filled with homemade treats. She loved to travel, and especially loved to take bus tours arranged by her bank. Luana, Jan, and K.D. will always remember the "girls-only" vacations they experienced. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. on Monday evening December 8th at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home. Memorial services will at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 at St John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Dave Gunderson officiating. Alice will be laid to rest at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton, SD. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
