Mrs. Floyd, widow of George W. Floyd, died at her daughter's home at Lake Murray on October 22 after an illness. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, June 20, 1922, she was the daughter of the late John Albert Glominski and the late Faye Harvey Glominski. She was graduated from Spartanburg High School and the University of South Carolina with majors in French and English and with minors in Physical Education and Spanish. She later earned a masters degree in History Education. During a 28-year career as a teacher at Conway High School, Mrs. Floyd taught multiple subjects, but will primarily be remembered for her contributions in teaching French through her exuberance for the subject, love of her students, and her summer trips to France with many of her students. She also boarded many students from France in her home, many foreign naval officers through the Conway Chamber of Commerce, and enjoyed lifelong relationships with many international friends. Mrs. Floyd was an active sports enthusiast which was evident during her years at Camp Pinnacle in Hendersonville, N.C. where she was voted Best All Around Camper and later served as a counselor. She also acted as the Water Sports Director at state parks in York and Cheraw. While at U.S.C., she was the only woman on the men's swim team when there was a shortage of men due to World War II. After her marriage took her to Conway, the American Red Cross asked her to teach swimming lessons and cleared Smith Lake to provide a teaching location. Mrs. Floyd was the first certified Red Cross Water Safety and Lifesaving Instructor for Horry County and was inducted this year into the American Red Cross Lifesaving Honor Society. Mrs. Floyd was also an avid gardener and was a member of the Conway Garden Club, where she served in a number of capacities including President. She and her husband were founders and charter members of the Riverside Club of Conway. After her retirement, Mrs. Floyd remained active with a number of avocations. She was a member of tennis teams in Conway and Prestwick Country Club in Myrtle Beach for many years, playing her last match in the state tournament of 2001. She continued her lifelong hobbies of bridge, waterskiing, crabbing, clamming, and shrimping. She enjoyed entertaining and cooking the fruits of her catches from the Garden City creek. She became a passionate traveler, including a 2-week bicycle trip with her children along the Rhine River in Germany to celebrate her 72nd birthday. Mrs. Floyd treasured her family, her students and her many, many friends. Her energy, attitude, wit, and constant smile brought the world to life for those fortunate enough to have known her. Surviving are children, John Wilson Floyd and his wife, Toni Holman, of Greensboro, Ga., Ellen F. Faris and her husband, Andy, of Lake Murray, S.C., Shirley F. Norton and her husband, Jack, of Lexington, S.C., and Sally F. Fife and her husband Lee, of Fort Mill, S.C.; brother, John Harvey and his wife Eleanor; grandchildren, Anna Burns Harris of Columbia, Steven James Norton of Lexington, Samantha Marie Fife and Nicholas Lee Fife of Ft. Mill. Her husband of 50 years, George, as well as a brother, Jim Harvey, predeceased her. (Charleston Post & Courier - Wednesday, October 23, 2002)
