Alice W. Rasmussen, 89, of Fremont, formerly of Hooper, died November 16, 2011, at Nye Legacy in Fremont.
She was born November 20, 1921, to H. Chris and Emma (Heitshusen) Hoegemeyer on their farm, near Hooper. She married Ross H. Rasmussen on Oct. 16, 1943. As a young girl, from her horse, she helped detassel the first field of seed corn that was sold in 1937 by her parents. Later, this business evolved into Hoegemeyer Hybrids. Alice W. Rasmussen, 89, of Fremont, formerly of Hooper, died November 16, 2011, at Nye Legacy in Fremont.
She was born November 20, 1921, to H. Chris and Emma (Heitshusen) Hoegemeyer on their farm, near Hooper. She married Ross H. Rasmussen on Oct. 16, 1943. As a young girl, from her horse, she helped detassel the first field of seed corn that was sold in 1937 by her parents. Later, this business evolved into Hoegemeyer Hybrids. During this time, she set up the first bookkeeping system for the company.
She graduated from Hooper High School in 1938 and from the University of NE-Lincoln in 1942 with a major in foods and nutrition. Later, she completed her internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO to become a Registered Dietician. Alice also worked at Lincoln General Hospital during a portion of WWII.
Hobbies included sewing, knitting, reading and collecting antiques of all kinds, especially quilts and dolls. Alice and her husband traveled extensively to Europe with the 87th Infantry Division organization visiting WWII battle fields.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, UNL Alumni Assn, NE Legislative Ladies, Omicron Nu Honorary, Fremont Business & Professional Women's Club, National Walnut Council, National Federation of Doll Clubs, NE Quilt Guild, NE State Historical Society, and Questers.
Survivors include daughters: Ruth McMaster of Nebraska City, Janice (Roger) Belohlavy of Crete, Nina Kavich of Fremont ; grandchildren: Scott (Tracy) & Brian (Vicki) McMaster of Seattle, Cindy Belohlavy of Fairlawn, Ohio, Amanda (Jeremy) Karr of Omaha and Paul Kavich of Denver; and great-grandchildren: Marissa, Lily, Ashley and Alyssa McMaster and Emmett and Kaylynn Karr. Also surviving is brother-in-law Lyle Stock of Lincoln and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross; infant son, Paul; brother, Leonard Hoegemeyer; sister, Lillian Hawks; and son-in-law David McMaster.
Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 11 am at First United Methodist Church, 815 N. Broad St, Fremont, NE. Rev. Michael McGregor will officiate. No visitation. Private interment at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont, NE. Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Monroe Ministry of First United Methodist Church of Fremont and to the Fremont Area Medical Center Hospice.
Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.
