The following life sketch was read at the service: "Alice Mae Reed, daughter of Thomas Marlin and Jane Whatt Aistrope, was born May 7, 1868 at Malvern and passed away Jan. 2, 1956 at the Methodist hospital in Omaha after a long illness. "She attended rural school, the Baptist Academy in Malvern and was a graduate of music at the Western Normal college of Shenandoah. She then became the head of the music department of the North Nebraska Normal college at Madison, Neb. "Here she meet Willis E. Reed and they were married March 10, 1891. They made their home in Madison, excepting a few years spent in Lincoln when Mr. Reed was attorney general. Mr. Reed preceded her in death in 1939. "All of life up to the time of her illness Mrs. Reed took an active interest in the in the affairs of her community. She was a past worthy matron and charter member of the Eastern Star and the Madison Woman's club, also a member of the Presbyterian church and an elder for the past number of years. Her daily life was an exemplification of her beliefs in God and her high ideals were an inspiration to both young and old with whom she came in contact. Not having any children of her own she bestowed her love and affection upon her nieces and nephews. She was the fourth youngest child of a family of 12 children of whom preceded her in death except a brother, Henry Aistrope, of Malvern and a sister, Mrs. Nellie Fritz, who has made her home with Mrs. Reed for the past 14 years. "She lived for those who loved her, "For her heart was kind and true, "For the heaven that shown above her "And the good that she could do." Alice Mae Reed Alice Mae Reed, clubwoman, was born at Malvern, Iowa, May 7, 1868, daughter of Thomas Marlin and Jane (Whatt) Aistrope. Her father was born in Wigift, England, December 11, 1928, and settled in White Cloud township, Iowa, in 1864. He was a farmer and stockman and a member of the Silver Creek Ranger Cavalry. His death occurred at Malvern on January 9, 1915. His mother, Marie Mason, and her father, George Aistrope, were born in England. Jane Whatt was born in Wigift, England, December 3, 1830, and died at Malvern, Iowa, December 3, 1898. She was a mother of eleven children, a devoted house wife and a friend of everyone. She was descended from the Whatt, Wressle, and West families, of England. Alice Mae Aistrope attended district school in Malvern, Iowa, and afterward attended Baptist Academy and Tabor College. She was graduated in music from Northwestern Normal College at Shenandoah, Iowa in 1888. While in college, she was a member of Deiphian literary society. On March 10, 1891, she was married to Willis Ellsworth Reed, lawyer and investor, at Malvern, Iowa. (See Nebraskana). Mrs. Reed is a Democrat. During 1916 to 1918 she was treasurer of the Nebraska Legislative League of Lincoln. For four years she served as president of the Dalith Chapter of the Delphian Society in Madison, and was secretary to the first district Delphians of Nebraska for two years. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Madison, the Red Cross, the Madison County Historical Society, and for several years was a member of the Madison Library Board. She is a charter member of the Madison Woman's Club of which she was president 1905-1906; vice-president of third district of Women's Clubs 1906-07, which was organized under her administration. For one year Mrs. Reed was president of the Presbyterian Aid Society, and for two years superintendent of its Sunday school. Mrs. Reed is a charter member of Plead Chapter No. 99 of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Madison County Golf Club, while her hobby is civic improvements. She has assisted greatly in farm organizations for the benefit of the farmer. During the late war she was an active member of the Red Cross, made heavy contributions to it not only in Madison, but did an immense amount of work as a member of the Red Cross in Lincoln, where Mr. Reed was attorney general. Both she and Mr. Reed were active workers in securing the Chautauqua at Madison when it was necessary to pay money to obtain outside talent, and Mrs. Reed has taken an active part in later work affording a free chautauqua each year for Madison.
