Schiefen, 89, of Hawarden died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at Morningside Manor Care Center in Alcester, S.D. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Visitation will be noon to 4 p.m. Monday at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Alice Margaret Ronan, oldest of nine children, was born July 11, 1916, to Margaret (Westergard) and Dan Ronan of Hawarden. She attended St. Mary's School for two and one-half years and the remainder of her elementary education at Logan Township District No. 3. She grew up in the Hawarden area. Alice did not go to high school but helped her father on the farm and from her mother, she learned to cook, bake, sew, how to plant a garden and keep house. Later, she worked as a housekeeper for various neighbors. Wages were $3 a week at that time. Alice married Leo Henry Schiefen on March 25, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden. They farmed in the Big Springs, S.D. area for 39 years, living near Big Springs and in Alcester, S.D. Leo retired from farming in 1972, and they moved to Hawarden. Alice learned the art of crocheting from her grandmother Westergard and continued the art in the making of many doilies and tablecloths. She and her husband, Leo made more than 40 under-glass collages of pictures of family members for family gifts with Leo having made all the frames. Alice and Leo had no children but she "adopted" 43 nieces and nephews of her siblings and always remembered them on birthdays and anniversaries with a letter or a card. It was not uncommon for her to send over 100 handwritten cards and letters at Christmastime each year. Alice's specialty was cooking and baking. In 1938, she became a dietician at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City. When the Hawarden Hospital opened, she was their first dietician. Leo passed away on Feb. 18, 1990, after 49 years and 11 months of marriage. Alice cherished life and spent over 20 years volunteering in caring and serving others at a nursing home. She was a prayerful person. Everyone who ever sat at her table for a meal or just a cup of coffee and a cookie was asked of God to bless her guests and their loved ones. Alice composed a prayer and requested that it be read at the celebration of her life. Grateful for having shared her life are her four sisters, Ellen (Mrs. Linus) Hurley, Kathleen (Mrs. Maurice) Tomjack, Margaret (Mrs. Glen) McVay, all of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Irene (Mrs. Lloyd) Batchelder of Rapid City, S.D.; many nieces and nephews and their families; plus a multitude of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Dan Ronan; two sisters, Florence and Mary; and two brothers, Eugene and John.
