Despite the difference in their ages, they... Read More	Alice M. Sernett - age 85, of Laurens, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa. Alice Marie Blazek was born February 29, 1932, in Chicago, IL. She was the daughter of Frank and Sue (Grzelakowski) Blazek. Alice grew up in Argo, IL, among a large, close extended family. For many years, she was an only child. When she was 14 years old, her only sibling, Frank Blazek Jr. “Buddy” was born. Buddy was one of the greatest joys of Alice’s life. Despite the difference in their ages, they were very close. Later in life, Bud married Mary Jane, who was like a sister to Alice. They became especially close when Alice and Gene wintered in Arizona. Alice graduated from Argo High School in 1949 and started working. Due to health problems Buddy had, the family was advised to move to a warmer, drier climate. Alice briefly considered staying in Argo with her grandmother, so she could continue working, but in the end, she realized she would miss her parents and her little brother too much. So, the four of them moved to Tucson, AZ together in 1951. That move proved to be one of the best things that ever happened to Alice. In the fall of 1952, when Alice was with a friend at a local club, from across the room, she saw a handsome young Air Force man. Alice said to her friend, “That’s the man I’m going to marry.” Later in the evening, she danced with that handsome man, Gene Sernett from Fonda, Iowa, who was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. On June 6, 1953, Alice and Gene were married in Tucson. They started their family when daughter, Sue was born in 1954. In 1954, they moved to Fonda and in 1955, daughter, Mary was born. A few months later, they moved to Laurens. Daughter, Kathy joined the family in 1956, followed by Pat in 1958 and Barb in 1960. In 1962, Alice and Gene and their five daughters welcomed to the family, their only son and brother, Joseph Eugene “Joe” Sernett, Jr. Alice and Gene enjoyed those early, very busy years raising their family. One of the greatest joys of their lives was watching their family grow, as their children became adults and married and then, the grandchildren came along. Alice treasured each of her grandchildren, appreciating their individual characteristics and abilities. In addition to spending time with her family, Alice loved reading, playing Scrabble and other games, watching game shows and old movies and exercising with her friends at city hall. In their retirement years, Alice and Gene enjoyed traveling and visiting their children and grandchildren. They bought a winter home in Florence Gardens, AZ, where they made many friends and participated in all of the activities their retirement community offered; golfing, swimming, singing groups and musical productions. They also loved the beautiful scenery of Arizona. As a young woman, Alice worked as a secretary. Later, she provided daycare in her home and also worked at The Laurens Sun, Don’s Foodland, the Laurens-Marathon School cafeteria and the Gilchrist Law Office in Laurens. She was involved in numerous volunteer activities over the years. Alice loved her church, where she participated in many activities, including choir, Rosary Society and teaching CCD. Left to cherish their memories of Alice are her husband of 64 years, Joseph Eugene “Gene” of Laurens; her children, Sue Johnson of Albuquerque, NM, Mary (Jim) Runneberg of Laurens, Kathy (Mike) Keane of Dakota Dunes, SD, Pat Sernett of Billings, MT, Barb (Dan) Edmonds of Sioux Falls, SD and Joe (Amy) Sernett of Omaha, NE; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Frank (Mary Jane) Blazek of Phoenix, AZ; Gene’s brothers and sisters and their spouses; aunt, Marge Grzelakowski of Summit, IL and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Michael Sernett; Gene’s parents, Jim and Alice Sernett; brothers-in-law, Mel Imming and Dale Murray; nephew, Steve Imming; cousin, Ken Tomlon and numerous aunts and uncles.
