Alice died peacefully at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City surrounded by her children and her friends. Alice Marie “Lollie” (Elbert) Stone was born on November 29, 1943 in Humboldt, Iowa to Raymond and Marie (Fandel) Elbert. Alice died peacefully at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City surrounded by her children and her friends. Alice Marie “Lollie” (Elbert) Stone was born on November 29, 1943 in Humboldt, Iowa to Raymond and Marie (Fandel) Elbert. At the age of eight, Alice lost her mother, and at the age of nineteen, she lost her father. Her parents, her younger brother Dennis, and her niece Pam Elbert also welcomed her into heaven with hugs. Alice and her siblings, Helen (Marion) Casey, Jim (Patricia) Elbert, Raymond (Carrie) Elbert, and Dennis (Rosalie) Elbert were raised on the family farm just outside of Whittemore, Iowa. She graduated from Bishop Garrigan High School in Algona. After high school, she stayed at home to help her family manage the farm until her father’s death. She then moved into Algona living with her siblings’ families or with her future sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Rosalie (Hyink) Elbert. In 1966, Alice was setup on a blind date with Gale Stone. Two weeks later, they were engaged. Just after their engagement, Gale left for a United States Navy deployment in Japan. After 18 months apart, they were married in Saint Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Algona on February 17, 1968. After their wedding, the couple was stationed at the United States Naval Base on the island of Guam. In Guam, Alice and Gale became parents to their two children: Carla Marie (Jon) Hart and Erik Michael (Jenn) Stone. For sixteen years, the Stones would live and work around the world. They lived in Guam, Virginia, Scotland, and Spain before settling in Iowa City in 1984. Gale preceded her in death on May 14, 2007. Alice was a devoted grandmother to Kristin and Allie Hart, Steven and Maggie Huting, and Wyatt Stone. Since the birth of Wyatt eight weeks ago, she had been enjoying her Wyatt time. Her nieces, nephews, and many others in Iowa City knew her affectionately as Aunt Lollieor Lollie. Alice worked for Hills Bank and Trust in the purchasing department for 32 years until the time of her death. Alice was a lifelong Catholic and a member of Saint Patrick Parish in Iowa City. Her family and friends remember Alice as a prankster and the life of the party. She was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved sports. Even her granddaughters’ teammates knew that Grandma liked Ws. Alice was a frequent visitor to the local farmers markets much to the delight (Kolaches) and dismay (shucking fresh peas) of her children, nieces, and grandchildren. Lollie was never one to turn down a trip to the casino, dinner with her friends, or a cold beer. Most of all, Alice “Lollie” Stone is remembered for comforting those around her. She had a knack for knowing when someone was in need of a helping hand or a kind word. She was the second youngest of five children and is survived by three siblings, Helen (Marion) Casey of LuVerne, Jim (Patricia) Elbert of Algona, and Raymond (Carrie) Elbert of Algona; four brother and sisters in law, Rosalie Elbert of Iowa City, Robert (Shirley) Stone of Houston, Texas,Pamela (Gerald) Dean of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Niki (Mark) Jones of Dickens, Iowa. Alice was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Dennis Elbert; father-in-law and mother-in-law, R. Carl and Dorothy (Benson) Stone; and a niece, Pam Elbert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, Friday, September 16, 2016 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City with The Very Reverend Rudolph T. Juarez officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Arthritis Foundation. The family would like to thank Dr. Feeley, Dr. Sarin and the nursing staff on Mercy’s 3 West, and Cancer Care of Iowa City.
