Description	:	Alice P. Metsker, 96, of Montrose, Iowa died at 8:05 A.M. Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Montrose Health Center, Montrose, Iowa. Alice was born July 25, 1912, in Idaho, the daughter of Charles R. and Uvena E. Arnold Pidgeon. She graduated from Grangeville, Idaho High School in 1930 and moved to Salem, Iowa in 1936. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College several summers in the 1940's and taught country school two years in Henry County Iowa. She married Merdith W. Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Montrose Health Center, Montrose, Iowa. Alice was born July 25, 1912, in Idaho, the daughter of Charles R. and Uvena E. Arnold Pidgeon. She graduated from Grangeville, Idaho High School in 1930 and moved to Salem, Iowa in 1936. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College several summers in the 1940's and taught country school two years in Henry County Iowa. She married Merdith W. Metsker, October 20, 1942, at the family farm in rural Salem, Iowa. He preceded her in death on July 12, 1952. Alice had worked as head of housekeeping at Graham Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa. She was a librarian at Montrose Public Library for many years. During that time the library hours were gradually expanded and a new, separate library building was constructed. She enjoyed reading, gardening, bird-watching, writing and receiving letters, needlework, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, watching Lawrence Welk and Wheel of Fortune, and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of Montrose Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served many years as Financial Secretary and formerly taught Sunday school and was active in the W.S.C. and U.M.W. She is survived by One son, Mark (Anna) of Montrose, Iowa; One daughter, Charlene, of Burlington, Iowa; One grandson, Darin, Four sisters: Elsie Craig, Clara (Norman) Watts, Dorthy Zuber, and Bertha Lou (Curt) Twedt; Two sisters-in-law, Alice Pidgeon and Carol Metsker Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; her father-and-mother-in-law: Otto and Grace Metsker; four brothers: Harlan (and Marcelia), Warren, Junior, and Rodger Pidgeon; three sisters: Ruth (and Ray) Burch, June (and Kenneth) McEwen; and one in infancy, a daughter-in-law: Carolyn (Dobson) Metsker; a sister-in-law: Leigh (and Glenn) Doty; and brothers-in-law: Leo Craig, Dean Zuber, Paul Street, and Jerry (and Fern) Metsker. Funeral services were Monday, December 1, 2008 at Montrose Methodist United Church with Rev. Goldie Laymon officiating. Burial followed at Montrose Cemetery, Montrose, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Montrose Methodist United Church or the Montrose Library.
