Description	:	According to the Wardlaw genealogy written by her grandson, David Lewis Wardlaw, the parents of Alice Rice Clarke Quay are unknown. Alice's first marriage was in northern Ireland to "a cousin named ______Rice, with whom she lived for six or eight years without children." She immigrated from Northern Ireland to Philadelphia with her parents, a brother, and sisters. Her date of birth is also not known, but was probably about 1750, to allow for a first marriage of 6-8 years before a second marriage and the birth of her first child in 1778. She immigrated from Northern Ireland to Philadelphia with her parents, a brother, and sisters. Her date of birth is also not known, but was probably about 1750, to allow for a first marriage of 6-8 years before a second marriage and the birth of her first child in 1778. About 1776 widow Alice Rice married Francis Clarke as her second husband. They lived in Philadelphia where they had three children, and then moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where Francis died in 1786. Known children of Alice Rice and Francis Clarke: Hannah Clarke (Wardlaw)(b.1778 d.1825) William Clarke (b.1779) Mary Clarke (Rose)(b.1781 d.1830) Alice married her third husband, John Quay, at Charleston, South Carolina. With her three young children, Alice moved to Abbeville where her husband was a merchant, and ran the Quay tavern, a stagecoach stopover and trading center. Soon after Alice's death, her husband John Quay decided to leave upcountry South Carolina. He was remarried at Abbeville on 8 August 1797 to Hannah Brown, and moved to New Jersey. In 1798 he sold the Quay Tavern to James Wardlaw, who had recently married his stepdaughter, Hannah Clarke. The Wardlaw family owned the house for many years, and made additions and improvements to the home, which in 2017 was still standing in Abbeville and known as the Quay-Wardlaw House. There were no children by the marriage of Alice Rice Clarke and John Quay.
