For two years she had been a resident of the Alzheimer's unit, Oahe Haven in Gettysburg, South Dakota. She was born Alice Storley, August 19, 1921 to Carl and Clara Storley on their farm near Roslyn, South Dakota. For two years she had been a resident of the Alzheimer's unit, Oahe Haven in Gettysburg, South Dakota. She was born Alice Storley, August 19, 1921 to Carl and Clara Storley on their farm near Roslyn, South Dakota. She attended Roslyn and Webster High Schools, and earned her rural Teaching Certificate from Northern State Teachers College in 1940. Alice taught in one-room rural schools in Day and Marshall Counties for many years. In 1945 she married Don Miller and they established a farm/ranch in Marshall County. They were married for 66 years until his death in 2011. They raised three children; Keith Miller of Windsor, CO, Jean Miller White of Denver, CO and Kirk Miller of Pierre, SD. They had a third son, Paige who died in infancy. Alice was active in Saron Lutheran Church near Roslyn, and was a valued 4-H leader in the same area. In 1968 she and Don moved to Pierre, where she returned to her love of education as an employee of the Pierre School District. She will be remembered by some of the students and staff of Buchanan Elementary where she served as Office Administrator and Assistant to the Principal for over 20 years, until her retirement in 1989. For 40 years Alice was a devoted member of Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre, and rarely missed the Wednesday Quilting Club where she used her sewing skills, and enjoyed the fellowship of the other women. In addition to being an excellent seamstress, she challenged herself by learning intricate Norwegian embroidery called hardanger, as well as calligraphy, knitting, tatting, and crochet. Her family and friends always enjoyed her delicious traditional Norwegian favorites: lefse, krumkake, and rosettes. The jury is still out on the lutefisk. She was a born teacher, with a passion for learning that she shared as a rural school teacher, 4H leader, Mother, and Grandmother to her six Grandchildren: Ross and Cole Miller, Devin and Jenna White, Drew and Taylor Miller. Alice will be missed by those whose lives she touched with her loving kindness. According to her wishes, her cremains will be interred at the Saron Lutheran Cemetery, next to her son Paige, during a private graveside service. Her children have a simple request. Please be aware of the ravages of Alzheimer's. It robbed them of their mother, and robbed her of a lifetime of memories.
