Alice Wiedrich, daughter of Martha (Kirschenmann) and Gottlieb Wiedrich, was born June 27, 1928 at her parent's farm NW of Roscoe, SD, the seventh of eight children. This is where she was brought up and attended the Hauck Rural School. She stayed on the farm until 1945 when she relocated to Roscoe and was employed at the Café owned by Joe Prisbe. In 1946, she moved to Eureka and was employed at the Rexall Café as a waitress. Alice married Waldon Kallenberger at the Eureka E.U.B. Church on March 30, 1947. The newlyweds first settled on Waldon's home farm four miles east of Eureka. In 1950, they settled in Eureka where Alice lived the rest of her life. She was employed as a sales clerk for 27 years—first on a part time basis at the Isaak Variety Store, then full-time at the Ben Franklin Store, and finally at V&S Variety. Alice retired in 1985. In retirement, Alice kept busy as a "gofer" for her husband's business, Kallenberger Electric, until it was discontinued in 2006. Alice was a member of the Zion Church where she was active in the Lady's group. She also was a longtime, office holding member of the Eureka VFW Auxiliary. She served on the Eureka Pioneer Museum Board, coordinated many blood drives, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and quilting. She was also a music lover and played piano by ear. She and Waldon never missed any local music events. She enjoyed decorating her church for Christmas and loved family reunions. She was a cat lover, a "cat-whisperer" of sorts, as evidenced by the countless strays that she tamed, adopted and nurtured throughout her life; although she loved them all, her favorite was "Snooper" who will continue to comfort Waldon in the days ahead. She was preceded in death by her father on May 14, 1945, her mother on March 11, 1979, three brothers (Henry, Milbert, Ted),and three sisters (Frieda Schumacher, Leah Schnabel, and Ruth Obenauer). Honorary bearers will be the Eureka VFW Auxiliary. Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, is in charge of arrangements.
