ALICIA SMITH, CALLED TO HER REWARD “The ranks of Brown County pioneers was thinned last week by the passing of Mrs. Alicia Smith who with her husband lived thru the early, exciting years when this section of the country was really the west. Thus another of those sturdy souls who played such a big part in the building of Long Pine, has gone to her reward, after an unusually long and useful life covering a span of 90 years. Mrs. Smith has been in failing health for the past few years but has been able to be up and around her home until about a week ago when she fell and broke both her hip and shoulder. Second OBITUARY: Alicia Chester Smith was born December 27, 1851, in Ontario, Canada; the daughter of William and Eliza Gilbert Chester. During the early fifties the family moved to Pewaukee, Wisconsin, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to George A. Smith, on December 5th, 1873. To this union, three sons were born: Lewis E., William C., and George A., all of whom survive, together with five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her twin sister, Mrs. Alice Seavey, of Compton, California and another sister, Mrs. Sophia Barker, of Superior, Wisconsin. Mrs. Smith’s husband, George A. Smith, Sr., deceased, came to Long Pine in November, 1882, and established the first lumber yard in Brown County, Nebraska. Mrs. Smith and two older sons arrived in Long Pine in March 1883 when this was the terminus of the old Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley railroad. Mr. and Mrs. Smith first established their home on a homestead three miles east of Long Pine, living there one year. In the spring of 1884 they moved to a ranch eighteen miles south of Long Pine where they lived for several years and then moved to Long Pine, living there continuously since that time. In her fifty nine years residence in and around Long Pine, Mrs. Smith was always active in the work of the church, and served for many years as a member of the school board. She was one of the organizers and an active member of the W.C.T.U., so long as that organization existed in this community. Mrs. Smith departed this life on the morning of April 9, 1942. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, April 12, and the pastor, Rev. L.E. Watt and Bishop Beecher of the Episcopalian church in charge. Burial was made in Grand View cemetery. ------------ CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our heart felt thinks to neighbors and friends who were so kind during the sickness and death of our mother and grandmother. Mounts of Atkinson, and Mrs. Lola Brown of Bassett and Bishop Beecher of Hastings who assisted with the services.”
