He married Margaret Terrill on 2 June, 1806 in Kentucky and were the parents of 17 children, of which 3 died in infancy. Margaret was born 18 August, 1790 and was the daughter of John and Rebecca Cornelius Terrill. The name is often spelled as Terrell in various records. He married Margaret Terrill on 2 June, 1806 in Kentucky and were the parents of 17 children, of which 3 died in infancy. Margaret was born 18 August, 1790 and was the daughter of John and Rebecca Cornelius Terrill. The name is often spelled as Terrell in various records. After Allen's death, Margaret traveled with her daughter Rebecca to California and remarried to a John Arnold. She died there ca. 1865. The information below was sent to me by a member of the Homer, Illinois Historical Society, on Jan 2, 2001. She had been contacted by other Poage researchers and this information is a mixture of their questions and replies. I have omitted some of the names and excerpts to respect their privacy. ............................. 3-15-1979: Allen Poage was first mentioned in the county in 1822. That is the year following the surveying of the state and Champaign county. He lived on a farm of 162 1/2 acres in Vance township in Vermilion county. According to the abstract on the farm, Allen was the original land grant settler of this property. The Poage neighborhood would have been in Vermilion Co., Vance Twp., east of now Route 49 at a point abt. half way between Homer & Ogden, IL. The name of the near cemetery is the Botkin Cemetery. March 21, 1979: I have had a chance to go through the abstract mentioned in my letter of the Mar. 15 and to get the dates from the stone. Following is the information that might be of interest to you: a reference lists - Nicholas Poage lot as 32 and a half A. and 80 A. west and south and 35 A. timber on the south and 40 A. of prairie n. of the Armstrong Swearingen farm. SOURCE: Abstract of approx 90 acres: G. T. Poage farm in the prairie- *reference to Sidney and J. A. Swearingen--description of 160 A. west half of N. W. quarter Sect. 27 township 19 N Range 14 west also west half of S.W. quarter Sec. 22." WILL OF ALLEN POAGE: - filed May 14 1853, heirs were James, Thomas, John and Margaret, his wife. Between Allen's death and 1900's when a cause to remove cloud from said real estate was filed, the wife and 12 children of Allen had died - Thomas, Malinda, Alpheus, Nicholas, Louany, Wm. B., Robert F., Rebecca T,, George, Allen (Jr.,) John, Mildred----leaving only James, George T. and Margaret Hamlin (wife of Nathaniel). The estate settled June 15, 1855. A statement that Nicholas Poage now deceased--there had been no inquiry or claim against said acreage for 50 years. The Poage family had a burial plot back of the house on their property with possibly five graves in it. Sometime in the last 75 years an owner dug down and buried headstones and all so that the land could be farmed. SAGA OF THE POAGE TOMBSTONE During the summer of 1987 the present owner's son was plowing back of the house in Vermilion County, the plow dislodged a piece of Allen Poage's tombstone. After some searching two more pieces were found, making it a complete stone. The pieces were placed in jig-saw fashion on a well curb behind the house and laid there for several years. The names and dates were said to have been very legible. The stone read: Allen Poage, died June 5, 1853, at the age of 75 yrs., 4 months, and 13 days. This would have made him born in 1778. It was reported that on the back of the stone were the names of his children and their birthdays. In 1993, an avid genealogist named David Peters and his wife from Nebraska contacted a couple in Homer seeking information on the Poage family as he was a great-grandson 3 times removed from the Alan Poage line. In 1994 David and his wife were traveling through the area on vacation and made arrangements to go out and see the stone and offered to purchase it, but the owner gladly gave him the pieces and helped them load them into their car. David had metal frames made to hold the stones together, then he and his son traveled to the Bowen Cemetery in Audubon Co., Iowa, where they dug the holes for the frame, and epoxied the stone pieces together to fit into the frame. .............................. COMMENT: During a trip to Exira, Iowa in April, 2001, I visited the Bowen Cemetery and found Allen Poage's stone placed close to his daughter Margaret Poage and Nathaniel Hamlin's stone. Allen's daughter Louann Poage "Bailey" Smith is buried behind Allen's stone near the fence. A metal plate at the bottom of the stone states that Allen Poage is buried in a farm field, near Homer, Illinois. The information above stated that the names and birth dates of his children were on the back of the stone in 1987 and still legible, but I saw no evidence of any names or dates on the back of the stone. I, and all of the Allen and Margaret Poage descendants out there, owe David Peters and his son our deepest gratitude for preserving this over a century and a half old stone for generations to come. I also thank David for giving me permission to share his story. My thanks to Tim Andersen of Audubon, Iowa for going to the Bowen cemetery and taking pictures of the stone for me to replace the ones I had lost.
