He married 1st a widow, Mrs Gary of Newberry County. No children by this marriage. Married * 2nd Mary Chappell, daughter of John Chappell and Elizabeth (Betsy) Brooks Married in 1840 and located in Greenwood some years before the War Between the States. Allen Vance accumulated a considerable amount of property there. He died in 1865 in Greenwood. His home on Cambridge Street was later bought by Dr J C Maxwell and is now occupied by W H Nicholson. Mr Vance and a young child were buried in the lower southeast corner of the residence lot. His widow and, the son, and a daughter removed to Louisiana and some years after the son, John Chappell Vance, had the bodies removed to a plot in Magnolia Cemetery here. Mary Chappell Vance was born in 1823 in Newberry County and died in Louisiana in 1870. ------------------------- The Index-Journal (Greenwood, SC) Saturday, 13 Dec 1947 The will of Allen Vance, recorded in Abbeville, is dated 29 Jul 1865 and it was proved 27 Oct 1865. His lands in Bosier Parrish in the State of Louisiana were willed to his 3 children, John Chappell Vance, Mary E Vance and Laura C Vance. His wife, Mary M Vance was to receive for and during her natural life one house and lot in the town of Greenwood in Abbeville County, the lot being stated to contain about 23 acres. His widow also was to have the use or her natural life a track of land near Greenwood in Abbeville County containing 485 acres. The executors of the will were his brother, Dr James Washington Vance of Louisiana and his son John Chappell Vance of Greenwood. The executors were directed to buy a gold watch and chain for each of the three children. Two codicils were made to the will. The appraisers of the estate were S T Parks, James Creswell and L L Bonds.
