Description	:	EDEN — Mr. Allen W. Hancock, Jr., 86, of 302 S. Kennedy Avenue (Arbor Ridge), passed away Wednesday evening, March 25, 2009, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Overlook Cemetery. Mr. Hancock was born January 17, 1923, in Draper, N.C. (now Eden), son of the late Allen and Nell Hopper Hancock. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Overlook Cemetery. Mr. Hancock was born January 17, 1923, in Draper, N.C. (now Eden), son of the late Allen and Nell Hopper Hancock. He was a member of North Spray Christian Church where he served as a Deacon, board member and choir member, as well as on various committees. He was also church treasurer for many years. Mr. Hancock was very active with Rockingham Habitat for Humanity; especially building cabinets. He retired from Fieldcrest Mills where he worked in the shop and later was supply department manager. Serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he served aboard the destroyer escort Halloran. He also served aboard the battleship USS New Jersey during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hancock also served in the Naval Reserves and was a retired volunteer fireman. Surviving are his two sons, Allen Hancock, III and wife, Jo of Timberlake, and Harold "Lee" Hancock and wife, Janet of Reidsville; one grandson, Allen Hancock, IV; two granddaughters, Michelle Hancock Champlin and Morgan Morris Hancock; four great-grandsons; one brother, John Hancock and wife, Dee of Gary, Ind.; sister, Mary Hancock Rudd of Columbus, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Warren Hancock; and grandson, Bobby Hancock. Published in the News Record on 3/27/2009
