And then, a long but peaceful good-bye. Alma Dietrich Runge, daughter of German immigrants, Alex and Pauline Dietrich, was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Gering, Neb. Alma, 86, was called to her Savior, July 28, 2012. She was the third of seven children and remained close to her four brothers and especially loved to laugh with sisters Lillian and Barbara, all of Nebraska. Alma married Jack Runge on Sept. 8, 1947. They transferred to Billings in 1949 where Jack worked for GW Sugar Co. for 24 years followed by employment with Consolidated Freightways until his retirement. A German housewife extraordinaire (she ran a tight ship!), Alma was a renowned baker of delicious ethnic sweets, was a self-taught seamstress and had an eye for beauty revealed through handcrafts and crocheted afghans. Alma worked at Will James Jr. High in the cafeteria from ‘67 to '87 as head baker and later as the manager. To this day her cinnamon rolls are remembered by former students. Devout Lutherans, Alma and Jack attended Trinity Lutheran Church. Alma and Jack raised three children, Linda Millenbach (Mat), Nancy Halter (Greg Jahn), and Thomas Runge (Marsha). They were very proud of their six grandchildren, Joe Millenbach (Becca), Kate Zimmerman (Dan), Kristin LaFever (Dave), Casey Halter (Heather), Toby Halter (Heidi Leonard) and namesake Jackson Thomas Montana Runge and have seven great-grandchildren. In 1972, they bought a cabin just south of Red Lodge on Rock Creek. Together they remodeled and enlarged the tiny cabin with plenty of recycled, re-imagined and re-loved supplies. The cabin was their ultimate dream getaway bringing them many years of fun and pleasure. Alma was a three-time cancer survivor, later diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in her mid-70s. Her quick smile, bright blue eyes and funny (albeit feisty at times) sense of humor endeared her to her caregivers at Grand Park Vintage Suites. Alma was blessed to receive such excellent care. Rocky Mountain Hospice played a valuable role in her final days. Alma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack, and brothers, Al and Kenneth Dietrich. The funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 537 Grand Ave., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. Visitation can be made on Friday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel West or at the church prior to the service. Interment will be at Terrace Garden Cemetery.
