Description	:	Alma Lorine (Winkelman) Johnson, passed away on May 21, 2014 at her home, at the age of 93. She was born on March 26, 1921 in Winnetoon, Nebraska, to Henry and Elsie (Guhlke) Winkelman. She spent her first years in Nebraska, but due to the Depression and Dust Bowl years, moved with her family to Washington State. She graduated from Jenkins High School in 1941 and was married to Floyd Johnson on June 9, 1944. Read More	Alma Lorine (Winkelman) Johnson, passed away on May 21, 2014 at her home, at the age of 93. She was born on March 26, 1921 in Winnetoon, Nebraska, to Henry and Elsie (Guhlke) Winkelman. She spent her first years in Nebraska, but due to the Depression and Dust Bowl years, moved with her family to Washington State. She graduated from Jenkins High School in 1941 and was married to Floyd Johnson on June 9, 1944. She left to join Floyd (who had been on Midway) while he was stationed with the Marines at Camp Lejune, NC, They returned when the war ended to settle in Chewelah once again. She and Floyd raised their three children on Eagle Mountain where they farmed, raised cattle and were orchardists. Alma was an active, civic-minded person who joined community organizations and always strove to make a difference. She was active in Scouting, first as a Cub Scout leader and then until her son made the Eagle rank in 1973. During her children’s youth, she was a Vacation Bible School and Sunday School teacher. She held offices in her bowling league, American Legion Auxiliary, and VFW. Alma was active in the GOP as an officer, a Precinct Committeewoman and sat for decades on the Election Board. She also took Census in 1970, traveling the county by herself. She loved playing Bingo and all the friends she made there. Alma and her mother played the button accordion and piano, along with several others musicians, to bring the old time music to the residents of the St. Joseph’s Long Term Care Unit and Sunny Acres. In her adventuresome life, she toured Europe, traveled to Kotzebue, AK twice, and in her early 80’s, she traveled by herself to South Korea to visit her brother Ken and wife, Radene. Alma also made many visits to her daughter in Charlotte, NC and son in Montana and Idaho. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, her parents, Henry and Elsie, her sister, Marlene, and brothers, Glen and Merlin. Alma is survived by her children, Lorine Johnson and husband, Jaime Martinez, Colville, WA; Valerie McGarity and her husband Al, Charlotte, NC; and Harlan Johnson and his wife, Terri, Chewelah, WA; Grandchildren, Leslie (Martinez) Hefter and husband Bob, Hillsboro, OR; Sam Martinez and wife, Kellie, Adam McGarity and wife Amanda, Michael McGarity, Ryan Johnson and Jenny Johnson. Great grandchildren, Alister McGarity, Oliver and Charlotte Martinez and Anna and Alex Munoz. Alma is also survived by her brothers Ed Winkelman, Roseburg, OR; and Kenneth Winkelman and his wife, Radene, Wenatchee, WA; sister, Eleanor Rausch, Spokane, WA; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. A celebration of life for Alma L. Johnson begins at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chewelah, Pastor Betty Krofft officiating. The graveside service will follow at Pioneer Cemetery in Chewelah. If one so wishes, memorial contributions can be made in Alma’s name to St. Paul Lutheran Church at P.O.
