Heio Janssen, 59-year-old Krem pastor who was convicted of the poison murder of 16-year-old Alma Kruckenberg in 1938, died at 10 a. m. Wednesday in the hospital at the North Dakota State penitentiary. Janssen, who was serving a life term in the penitentiary, was born in Germany. At the time of his conviction he had been a pastor at Krem for approximately 5 years. Previously, he served a parish in Montana for 18 years and before that was stationed at Harvey, N. D., for eight years. Coroner Robert G. Aune has ordered an autopsy performed in compliance with the state law and an Inquest is scheduled for Thursday night. Members of the coroner's Jury are Oscar T. Raaen, Albert Papacek and B. T. Holta. Janssen was arrested a few days after the body of the 16-year-old girl, who was a maid in his household, was found in the smouldering ruins of the parsonage. When the body of the young girl was turned over to undertakers for burial it was discovered she was pregnant. Janssen at first denied any knowledge of her condition but, under questioning, confessed all the sordid details of the crime. He told authorities he had had intimate relations with the girl and that, upon learning of her condition, had given her a glass of wine in which he had placed some poison. He said he then carried her body upstairs, placed it on a bed, gathered some old rags together and set fire to the house. Janssen came to the United States when 17 years old. He obtained his grammar and high school education in Germany and attended normal school at Dubuque, Iowa. At the time of his conviction he had served in the ministry for 31 years.
