Shortly after his birth his parents removed to Delaware County, Iowa, where they lived for the remainder of their lives near Colesburg. The father, Daniel Patridge was born in New York, moved thence to Michigan, Ohio and Iowa successively and was a pioneer in Delaware county. Those of his children who grew to maturity beginning at the eldest were: Mrs. Emma Ma[p]es, of Earlham, Iowa; Mrs. Lucy Baldwin, of Goodman, Mo., Irving and Albert, both now deceased, Mrs. Candace Mert[e]n of Colesburg, Iowa; Almon D. Patridge, Mrs. Rhoda Prentice of Alta, Iowa, and Mrs. Mary Cole of Storm Lake, Iowa. The eldest son James, the youngest son Elton and a daughter Elsa died in infancy. With this exception all of his sisters survive Mr. Patridge, but he was the last of his generation to bear his name. Almon was educated in the public schools near his boyhood home and in the high school at Manchester, Iowa. For two years he taught in schools of that vicinity. On March 11, 1877 he married Lydia Beckner whose parents were also among the earliest residents in Delaware County. After two years spent there on the Patridge farm the couple moved to Fayette County which has been their home for thirty-seven years. Here all of the children except the eldest was born. All, with the mother, live to mourrn the departed except Rhoba who passed away as a little one; the others being Mrs. Ella Le[o]nard, of Elkader, Iowa; John A. Patridge, of Kimberly, Idaho; Mrs. Sarah Murley of Mason City, Iowa; Mrs. Ruth Hungerford, of Madison, Wis.; Miss Helen, Irving and Miss Marian, of Maynard. In the declining health of the father the younger son has been the main dependence of the household. Mrs. Patridge co-operated heartily with all his children in securing an adequate education and five of the seven children had college educations. The esteem in which his talents and sterling character were held by his neighbors in evidenced by his having been at various times among the leaders and officers in different political, social and business groups. But when we have said all this we have come short of expressing the real Almon Patridge. Two qualities were prominent in his home life; one was the regard for education and his encouragement of high ideals along this line; the other was his intense love for the world out of doors, its plants and animal life. His brain, was a mind of information about the names and habits of birds and animals and about many varieties of flowers. Every song bird's nest was sacred on his farm and a squirrels sport pleased his last days. Along with the stern traits of a hard working man, Mr. Patridge had much of the poet in his nature in that he was responsive and sympathetic not only to nature but to the feelings of others and especially to little acts of heroism in everyday life. These traits he passed on to his children who for this and may other reasons bear a debt of gratitude and love to him. Last year all of his sisters and all of his children but one and many other relatives gathered to celebrate his birthday and shortly before his death the nearest of these relatives visited with him again. Mr. Patridge was baptized in the Methodist Church at Colesburg and received into membership there. For the church he always retained a strong interest and was connected with the building of the church here. In his dying moments the words he often repeated were: ‘Jesus can make the dying bed as soft as downy pillows are'. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Clyde Murley, of Mason City, a son-in-law of the deceased and Rev. J. F. Mitchell, of Maynard, at the Methodist Church at two o'clock on Thursday afternoon, January 27, and the body was laid to rest beside that of the little daughter in Long Grove Cemetery.
