Read More	Evening Times-Republican, Marshalltown, Iowa, 19 March 1902 City’s First Smithy Dead Man Who Made First Plow Shares to Break Prairie Sod Dies at Bromley The remains of Alonzo Butler, the first blacksmith of Marshalltown and the man who made many of the first plow shares that broke the prairie sod of Marshall County, were brought to the city Monday evening from Bromley and interred in Riverside. Mr. Butler died Monday at his home in Bromley, where he had lived for the past sixteen years. He was born in Cortland County, New York, May 29, 1832, and when 10 years of age emigrated to Illinois, where he learned the trade of a blacksmith. At Dixon, where he was located, he was married on July 4, 1853, to Miss Mary Church. In 1859, with his wife, he came to the point where Marshalltown now stands, and built here the third frame house erected in the town, living in a little log hut at the front of Varnum’s hill, while his new home was under course of erection. Mr. Butler lived here twenty-one years, seeing the infant hamlet grow and thrive, until it became a city. After leaving Marshalltown, Mr. Butler moved his family to LaMoille, where he lived for six years, and from there went to Union, where the family resided for five years. After a short residence at New Providence he moved to Bromley, where he lived up to the time of his death. Mr. Butler is survived by his wife and five children—Mrs. Lillie Vandervene [Vanderveen], of Wessington Springs, S.D.; Orrin and Sylvester Butler of Radcliffe; and Albert and Fred Butler of Bromley. One daughter was the first wife of Mr. Al C. Everist, of this city, she having died fourteen years ago, as did two other daughters, Edith and Neva, in the same year. Those accompanying the remains to the city from Bromley were Messrs. and Mesdames Fred and Sylvester Butler, Messrs. Orrin and Albert Butler, Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Ward, Messrs. M.A. and Edgar Ward, Edwin Radcliffe, and John Monroe; Mr. J.L. Ingledue, Jr., of Minerva; Mr. Frank Ingledue, of Clemons, and Miss Vera Everist , of this city. From LaMoille, there were present at the interment Mrs. Jonas Pratt, Mrs. S.E. Meeker, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Butler, and Mr. Petty Butler.
