Bud Brietfelder, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Gilsdorf Breitfelder was born on January 10, 1908 at Lawrence, Nebraska and passed away July 1, 1985 at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 77 years, 5 months. He lived his early years in Lawrence and was a graduate of Lawrence High School, where he was active in music and baseball. After graduation, he worked for his grandfather who owned and managed the Lawrence Telephone Company. He was also a section crewman on the railroad. He played baseball with the Lawrence team for many years as a pitcher. He went on to become a member of the Nebraska State League. He was sent to the Detroit Tiger Club, where he played until he was forced to retire because of an injured elbow. In 1979 he was inducted into the Nebraska Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame. He was united in marriage to Leota Barrett at St. Mary's Church in Oconto, Ne. on June 27, 1934. They moved to Lincoln where he worked for a Dairy Company. After 1939, the family moved to Custer County and began farming. They also farmed for a time in Dawson County. Upon returning to Lincoln, he was employed by the University as a maintenance engineer. He later started his own business, Breitfelder Studios, Inc., renovating and redecorating churches, etc., throught (sic) the midwest (sic). After becoming paralized (sic) in 1969, he was bedridden until his death. He is survived by his wife, Leota, five daughters: Mrs. Dan (Marilyn) Root, and Mrs. Gary (Beverly) Hussey, both of Denver, Mrs. Donald (Donna) Houser, Sharon Hartz, and Dixie Schreiner, all of Lincoln; one son, Pat Breitfelder, Lincoln; two sisters: Mrs. Blanche McCleery of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Mrs. Lloyd (Frances) Brown of Hastings, Ne.; two brothers, Vincent of Lincoln, and Fred of Dubuque, Ia.; 19 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews and one aunt.
