Description	:	Althea Minna Glaser was born August 22, 1926, to Christian C. and Minna (Breitag) Glaser on a farm in Howard township, McPherson Co., SD. She was the youngest of five children. She died on December 21, 2017, at the age of 91. Althea was raised on a farm southwest of Leola, SD. Read More	Althea Minna Glaser was born August 22, 1926, to Christian C. and Minna (Breitag) Glaser on a farm in Howard township, McPherson Co., SD. She was the youngest of five children. She died on December 21, 2017, at the age of 91. Althea was raised on a farm southwest of Leola, SD. One of her best memories was riding to country school on her Indian pony and meeting up with the three Kusler boys and giving one of them a ride on her horse. She graduated from Leola High School in 1944. She graduated from Northern Normal (NSU) with a teaching certificate and taught in McPherson Co. rural country schools until the early 1960’s. She took the train to Minneapolis, MN where she married her soldier, Francis J. Lapka on February 7, 1946, when he returned from WW II. Francis & Althea farmed northeast of Leola, SD and raised seven children on his parents homestead. Some of the greatest joys for Althea & Francis were the old-time dances and the neighborhood Friday night card parties. The chizlic or fish was always started after midnight. When they took to the dance floor people watched in awe. In her kitchen, Althea taught younger people to dance. Just ask David and Dennis Feickert. To this day many of their descendants enjoy dancing. Althea did not allow any grass to grow under her feet. She was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary. She held many offices including District 14 President for the State of SD and state delegate to the 1980 National Convention. She sold cosmetics, Watkins, as well as jewelry. She did macramé, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and sewing. Althea made a wedding dress and all five of her daughters wore the same dress (with modifications) when they were married. She loved her indoor and outdoor plants. From spring to fall she could be found tending her many flower beds. She made paper tole prints and ceramics. Her love of ceramics inspired her to start Al’s Ceramics, Etc. in 1986. There she spent many hours teaching others what she loved. After the death of Francis, Althea continued to operate the dairy farm. She milked cows twice a day, well into her late seventies, until the herd was sold in 2003. Grateful for having shared Althea’s life are her children; Kay (Tony) Kamm, Betty Hoffman, Jerome (Roxana) Lapka, Peg (Ron) Schumack, Bobbie (Gary) Rath, Georgiann (Jeff) Toupal, Karl (Laura) Lapka; eighteen grandchildren, twenty three great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Francis, their infant son, James; her parents, three sisters, one brother; grandson, JW Toupal, and son-in-law, Wilton Hoffman.
