Description	:	Unity, September 19, 1954 – Sorrowing townspeople in Unity Sunday paid tribute to the memory of Alton McCormick, 47, Unity resident and one active for years in the town's activities. His funeral was held this afternoon from the Union Church, and those attending overflowed the capacity of the church. The Rev. Lloyd Jewett, church pastor, conducted the service. His funeral was held this afternoon from the Union Church, and those attending overflowed the capacity of the church. The Rev. Lloyd Jewett, church pastor, conducted the service. Flowers from family, friends and associations of which he was a member occupied a large portion of the church. Attending in bodies were Star of the West Masonic Lodge, which conducted the burial ritual of order; Invictus Lodge of Odd Fellows and Favori Rebekah Lodge. Bearers were William Barrows, Walter Bradeen, Ernest Richardson, Eric Vickery, Alton Lowell and John Burwell. The bodied will be cremated and the ashes buried in the Pond Cemetery in Unity. Mr. McCormick lost his life when he was swept away while attempting to rescue persons thrown into Sandy Stream at the height of its freshet September 11. His body was found Friday afternoon near the stream's outlet into Lake Winnecook. McCormick was born at Masardis June 27, 1907, the son of Joseph and Ethel Ireland McCormick. In 1924, he was married to Sylvina Curtis of Jackman, and went to live in New Hampshire, moving to Unity 23 ½ years ago. He was employed by the Portland Packing Company for a year and worked with the Maplewood Lumber Company for 12 years. He then operated a Gulf Oil service station in town and inspected and serviced oil burners. (Published in the Republican Journal)
