When he was about 12 years old he became ill at school and started home . He became exhausted and lay down in the snow , the effects which left him deaf for the remainder of his life .He could speak to others but he always carried a small slate in his pocket for those who could not use the finger alphabet. When his youngest son Alva Jr was about 2 yrs old , the family moved from Appanoose county t the farm near Pulaski formerly owned by his mother . He lived there until he retired to Bloomfield about 8 years before his death . While in Appanoose County the family lived in true pioneer fashion. They lived in a log house . The family cut wild grass along the Chariton river for winter hay for livestock. Corn was planted with a hand planter in tracks made by a marking cart, he and his older sons cut, hued and smoothed railroad ties with a broad axe.In the evening often by kerosene lantern light , they would often shave barrel hoops from hickory saplings, these were sold for an income from their forty acre farm. On leaving Appanoose county ,the forty acre farm was traded for a team of horses,a set of harness, a wagon and a saddle .
