She was born Dec. 16, 1900, at her parents' farm home near Adams in Johnson County, Neb., to George and Volka (Flora) Buehler. When she was two years old, her family moved to Cumberland, Baron County, Wis. Alvena was a pioneer child. In October 1907, her father filed a homestead claim just north of Duck Creek in Adams County, N.D. In March 1908, Alvena accompanied her mother and two oldest brothers, Harry and Roy, on the new Milwaukee railroad to Haynes, eight miles east of Hettinger. There her father met them with a team and open buggy to take them to their new home, three miles north and two miles east of Haynes. Alvena grew up on the Buehlers' Duck Creek farm, and went to school in the nearby one-room schoolhouse in Kansas City Township. When she was in the eighth grade, the regular teacher quit in mid-year and Alvena actually became the teacher to finish the school year. Alvena attended high school at Mott while staying there with her grandparents during the school year. Alvena learned to play a five-octave pump organ at the Kansas City School. A few years later, her father bought one at a farm auction, and soon Alvena began music lessons from a young woman who circled her vicinity in a buggy to give piano lessons to children. Alvena and Leonard, who owned and played a clarinet in high school, encouraged each of their children in music. Alvena's interest in music continued throughout her life. In her tenth decade, she played the piano for church services at the Mott Center and for the enjoyment of other residents at the Edgewood Home. In 1920 Alvena voted in the first presidential election in North Dakota that authorized women to vote. Since then, she voted in every general election during her life, including November 2002. Alvena married Leonard McNeil at the Buehler home on Dec. 8, 1922. Leonard and Alvena lived and raised their family on a farm two miles north and one mile east of Hettinger. Leonard retired from active farming about 1962, and they moved into an apartment in Hettinger. After that, Leonard and Alvena traveled widely. Leonard died Sept. 28, 1982. The Methodist church was a central part of Alvena and Leonard's life. Leonard helped build the first Methodist Church in Hettinger in 1908, and they met through a Methodist youth group that gathered at the Kansas City School. They remained active in the Methodist church the rest of their lives. Alvena served actively in the Women's Foreign Missionary Society, known locally as the Ladies Aid. In 1939, this group became the Women's Society of Christian Service. During the 1940s, Alvena served as local president, as well as district president, of this WSCS, and traveled widely in the state for it, including summer sessions at Wesley Acres, a Methodist campground on the Sheyenne River north of Valley City. Twice, she held the office of conference secretary of Youth Work, and attended a national conference in Michigan on that work. With Leonard's support, she drove to WSCS meetings in every corner of the state. She often picked up a carload of other members in nearby towns or along the way. In this way, she made numerous friends throughout the state. Alvena was an ardent supporter of the Hettinger community library, which began in 1909 or 1910 in the home of Dr. and Stella Johns. Alvena served on the board of the Library Association for many years, often as the secretary-treasurer, and helped petition the county commissioners to support the library and to place it in the county courthouse. In 1994 Alvena moved to the Good Samaritan Retirement Center at Mott. Until 1997 she still drove her own car to visit friends and sightsee in the Mott vicinity. In 1999 Alvena moved to the Edgewood Vista Assisted Living Home in Minot to be near her daughter, Shirley Ruth Meschke. In July 2002, after her health began to fail, she moved to the Manorcare Nursing Home in Minot. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Ruth and Herb Meschke, Minot, and Helen and William Clements, Harlowton, Mont.; her granddaughters, Dr. Marie Meschke, Sandpoint, Idaho, Jean M. (Rick) Bouffard, Kent, Wash., and Jill (Pat) Blair, San Pablo, Calif.; her grandsons, William Clements, Harlowton, Mont., and Michael Meschke, Elizabeth, Colo.; her great-grandchildren, Aurora and Finan Adamson, Sandpoint, Idaho, Mason and Taylor Bouffard, Kent, Wash., Sara Clements, Harlowton, Mont., Justine Alvena Meschke, Elizabeth, Colo., and Conan Blair, San Pablo, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; their son, John; her parents; and her brothers, Harry, Roy and Russell. The family suggests that memorials be made to the donor's choice.
