Description	:	Alvin was born in 1927 in the ranch country of the Texas Panhandle. At a time in Texas history when large ranches were measured in miles, not acres. He grew up in the years of the Great Depression. His character and values were forged and steeled by hard times and hard work. At a time in Texas history when large ranches were measured in miles, not acres. He grew up in the years of the Great Depression. His character and values were forged and steeled by hard times and hard work. He liked the cowboy life and was happiest when he was riding his horse and working cattle. During his high school years his summers were spent working as a cowhand for several local ranches. He was truly a working cowboy. He was very knowledgeable on the subject of Western History. He liked stories of the Old West. He admired the American Indians. He always had a book to read on these subjects. He had empathy for the Indians because he felt they were exploited and abused. They were driven from their native lands, destroying their culture and lifestyle. He loved nature. He once told a friend that there should be 11 Commandments. The 11th being: "Thou shalt not be cruel to animals." In his retirement, he liked to sit outside in the summer evenings with a cigar and a beer and watch the birds, squirrels, dogs or whatever scampered across the yard. Many times our neighbors would see him outside and stop for a visit. He enjoyed these pure, simple things. He was a loyal, faithful husband. He always did his best to provide for his family. He didn't care too much for social involvement. His joy was his family and his home. He had a very good sense of humor. When our family gets together, we tell and retell many, many funny "Dad Stories." He had the golden ability to laugh at himself and to find humor in his mistakes. One of our favorite stories is the time he took our 16-year old to get his first car. They found a car they liked at a small local dealer. We found he was really a wheeler dealer in negotiating a good deal. In a loud, bold manner, he told the car dealer, in no uncertain terms, that he would pay $600 and not a penny more. The dealer looked down, frowned, thought it over for a while then looked up and said, "Well, actually I was only asking $500 for it." Our son said if he had one word to describe him it would be "honest." He always spoke his mind and we would sometimes cringe at the things he would say. We are thankful for the time we had together. His absence leaves a big void in our family. We will always miss him, but praise to Our Heavenly Father, we look foreword to a reunion with him in God's Kingdom.
