Visitation is Tuesday June 4 from 4:30-8 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral in Decorah and Wednesday after 10 a.m. at First Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 5 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Marion Pruitt Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, and Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah is in charge of arrangements.Decorah Public Opinion June 3, 2002 Alvin Herman Wilhelm Gipp was born July 1, 1908 in Frankville Township, Winneshiek County, the youngest son of six children born to Herman and Johannah (Hoth/Schutta) Gipp. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Eldorado, Iowa, October 14, 1908, with Herman Pankow and Will Schutta as his sponsors. He was confirmed September 17, 1922. Alvin Gipp graduated from Postville High School May 27, 1927, an accomplishment only he and his younger sister were able to achieve. He was superintendent of Frankville No. 6 country school until 1961. Alvin Gipp met his wife, Jeanette Woldum, at Sandy's Restaurant in Decorah where she worked as a waitress. They were married at the First Norwegian Lutheran Church (First Lutheran) in Decorah June 29, 1941. After their marriage, Alvin and Jeannette Gipp moved to the farm that belonged to Alvin Gipp's parents, Herman and Johannah Gipp, in Frankville Township. When his parents retired to Ossian in 1943, Alvin and Jeannette Gipp took over the farm. They raised five sons; John, Gerald, James, Charles and Dean.They retired to Decorah in 1975. On July 1, 2001, Alvin and Jeanette Gipp celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with many of their children, spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren present. His hobbies included fishing, traveling and watching sports. Survivors include five sons; John (Karen) Gipp, Gerald (Elaine) Gipp, James (Pam) Gipp and Charles (Ranae) Gipp, all of Decorah and Dean (Cyndi) Gipp of Cedar Falls; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl (Evelyn) Gipp of St. Paul, Minn.; three sisters-in-law; Edith Gipp, Ruth Woldum and Frances Woldum, all of Decorah; Telford and Dorothy Woldum of Pinellas Park, Fla., and by several nieces and nephews. Alvin Herman Wilhelm Gipp was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jeanette Gipp and January 15, 2002; one brother, Elmer Gipp and three sisters; Ida Watne, Edna Mundt and Hazel Foeller.
