He was the Jackson County Livestock Association’s 1998 Stockman of the Year. He was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Valley Falls, the son of John Frank and Frances Anne Loecke Herbers. Read More	Alvin J Herbers, 73, Holton, died Monday, August 9, 1999, at his home Mr. Herbers was a farmer and a stockman, and he had been a carpenter. He was the Jackson County Livestock Association’s 1998 Stockman of the Year. He was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Valley Falls, the son of John Frank and Frances Anne Loecke Herbers. He moved to the Holton area from Valley Falls in 1965. Mr. Herbers was a member of the Holton Lions Club and the Evangel United Methodist Church, where he was active in the Volunteer Sunday school class and the Pastor-Parish Relation Committee, and he was a member of the Jackson County Livestock Association. He also had been a 4-H leader, and he was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He married Charlotte Earline Cummings on February 8, 1947. She died February 11, 1972. He later married Betty Beightel Schirmer on April 12, 1985, at Holton. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Ralph Herbers and Jack Herbers, both of Holton, and James Herbers, Independence, Mo.; four daughters, Julia Fahrmeier, Olathe, Marian Bartley, Independence, Mo., Susan Cole, Arma, and Lois Sechrist, St. Louis; two stepdaughters, Vicki Bell, Topeka, and Julie Perkins, Whitestone, VA; two sisters, Leona Fortmann, Dyersville, Iowa, and Teresa Smith, Valley Falls; and 18 grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Evangel United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Holton. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
