Alvin John, the son of Justice Frederick “Fritz” and Elsie (Schatz) Gross, was born May 29, 1923 at the West Union Hospital (now the Fayette County Historical Society). Alvin was baptized June 24, 1923 and confirmed May 16, 1937 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado. He enjoyed growing up on the farm and attending country school in Eldorado. After finishing eighth grade and completing one year of high school in West Union, he helped his father on the family farm and frequently helped out neighboring farmers for a dollar a day. As a young man he worked as a farm hand for Reuben Koester, a cream hauler for Leonard Pape, and a sawmill worker for Reynold Baumler. Alvin was drafted into the United States Army, serving from 1946 until 1951. From 1948 until 1949 he served as an engineer, building bridges in South Korea. He diligently sent every paycheck back to his parents in Iowa. Alvin was a member of the West Union American Legion Post #15. While attending his cousin’s birthday party in Hawkeye, Alvin met and fell in love with Lilli Rauter. The couple were married on December 13, 1952 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado. Alvin and Lilli farmed in partnership with his parents and his brother, Walter, and then on halves with W.P. Lauer, east of Eldorado. In 1959 they purchased a farm north of Eldorado and made it their home. Alvin was very proud of his six daughters, who worked as hard as any son on the farm. His six sons arrived when he proudly walked his daughters down the aisle at their weddings. Alvin and Lilli “semi” retired from farming in the fall of 1980 and moved to Eldorado to care for his mother, Elsie. He still enjoyed helping on the farm when needed and did carpentry work with Lenny Stensland on the side. Alvin was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and served as trustee. Alvin and Lilli were janitors at St. Peter Lutheran Church for fourteen years and they mowed the church cemetery for three years. Some of his favorite things were pickled herring, John Deere tractors, trains, fishing, hunting, trapping, pickled pigs feet, sauerkraut, and pizza. He was an excellent woodcarver and gave many of his carvings away to family and friends. Alvin and Lilli enjoyed their time with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and Sunday meals after church. They also enjoyed traveling, whether it was by car, sometimes by plane, but his favorite was by train. Alvin is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Lilli; six daughters, Carolyn (Robert) Metcalf of Sumner, Iowa; Christine (Larry) Moritz of West Union, Iowa; Janet (friend, Robert Weber) Huebner of Clermont, Iowa; Joyce (Eugene) Halverson of Ossian, Iowa; Sara (Randi) Vagts of West Union, Iowa; and Nancy (David) Lyons of West Union, Iowa; his grandchildren, Wayne Metcalf, Wendy Medlin; Heidi Eitel, Robyn Moritz, Daniel Moritz; Christopher Anderson, Aaron Anderson, Aleesa Kittrell; Brandi Gih, Morgan Simar, Jena Elsbernd; Derrick Vagts, Amber Langreck, Loren Vagts; Isaac Lyons and Tucker Lyons; his great grandchildren, Kylie and Justin Metcalf; Isabell, Lillian, and Blake Eitel; Cayl and Dayne Anderson; Pearl Gih; Taelynn Elsbernd; Mitchell, Hanna, and Kennedi Vagts; Brady and Parker Langreck; Xander and Dominic Vagts; and Briella and Bennett Kittrell; a sister, Clara Trapp of Carmel, Indiana; and a sister-in-law, Geneva Gross of Mosinee, Wisconsin. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Elizabeth Huebner; son-in-law, Dwayne Huebner; a brother, Walter Gross; nephews, Kim and Kendall Gross and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Trapp. Visitation will be Sunday, June 19, 2016 from 4-7 pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Monday. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, June 20, 2016 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado, Iowa with Rev. Ginny Olson as the Officiant.
