Al, son of Stephen and Philomena (Liekhus) Schrage, was born June 2, 1924 at Elgin, Nebraska. Al was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Church, attended St. Boniface and Elgin (NE.) Read More	Alvin Stephen "Al" Schrage, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the Golden Living Center, Neligh, Nebraska. Al, son of Stephen and Philomena (Liekhus) Schrage, was born June 2, 1924 at Elgin, Nebraska. Al was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Church, attended St. Boniface and Elgin (NE.) High Schools and graduated in 1942. He farmed with his father until entering the US Navy in May 1944 and served his country until being honorably discharged in May 1946. He returned to Elgin, Nebraska and resumed farming on his parents' farm. On August 17, 1953, Al married Mary Helen Fritz at St. Boniface Church, Elgin, Nebraska. They lived on the family farm near Elgin, Nebraska where they were blessed with three children: Deb, Sherri and Mark. Al continued living on the farm until moving to town in 1987. Al continued his time working around the farm, referring to himself as a "suitcase farmer". Al enjoyed farming, raising cattle, playing cards, reading, learning about history, hunting for arrowheads and Indian artifacts, traveling with life long friends Ray and Leora Dinslage, and most of all spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Al was a lifetime member of St. Boniface Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #229 and VFW Post # 5816 of Elgin. He was a former member of the Cedar Township Board and the St. Boniface Parish Council. Al is survived by: wife, Mary Helen Schrage of Elgin, Nebraska; children, Deb (Kyle) Warren of Elgin, Nebraska, Sherri (Dave) Peterson of Norfolk, Nebraska and Mark (Brenda) Schrage of Elgin, Nebraska; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother: Urban (Celine) Schrage of Salinas, California; sisters-in-law: Juan Hoefer of Elgin, Nebraska and Dorothy Schrage of Red Oak, Iowa; brother-in-law: Paul (Joan) Fritz of Owensboro, Kentucky and a host of family and friends. Al was preceded in death by: parents; son-in-law, Terry Zegers; grandson, Andrew Peterson; brothers, Hubert, Clarence, Gilbert, Wilfred and Art Schrage; sister: Philomena Lee; sisters-in-law, Annabel Schrage, Margaret Schrage and Joanie Fritz and brothers-in-law, Leonard Hoefer and Robert Lee. Interment was in St. Boniface Catholic Church Cemetery, Elgin, Nebraska.
