Private family graveside services will be Friday May 8 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Cemetery in rural Gilbert. Alyce was born in Ames on December 17, 1945 to Forest and Esther (Burley) Groomes. She grew up in rural Colo with five sisters and one brother where she attended and graduated from Colo schools. Alyce was born in Ames on December 17, 1945 to Forest and Esther (Burley) Groomes. She grew up in rural Colo with five sisters and one brother where she attended and graduated from Colo schools. She married Harvey "Jim" Wirth 49 years ago in Omaha August 29, 1971. Alyce and Jim settled down in Story City. They worked hard, built a great life and enjoyed traveling around the United States when they had the opportunity. They had two sons; Todd (Kristine) Wirth and Jason (Angela) Wirth and three grandsons (Nile, Eddie and Tommy) and one granddaughter (Grace). Alyce loved her family. One step in her living room will show you hundreds of family photos on display. She was always active in their lives, from the early days teaching her sons' Sunday School and serving as a den mother in Cubs scouts to watching her grandchildren activities. Alyce began her career as a beautician then subsequently received her finance degree and took a job at the City of Ames where she worked for 25 years crunching numbers for the accounting department. Alyce was a proud Cyclone fan even if both her boys went to school at the University of Iowa and became Hawkeyes. Alyce got to know Story City pretty well. She could often be seen walking the perimeter of the town. She also volunteered at Grace United Methodist Church where the family attended for over forty years. She is survived by her husband, sons, grandkids and four sisters; Joan Calhoun of Nevada, Barbara Clatt of Colo, Shirley Bauge of FL, Karen Erickson of NV. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Donna Lee and her brother Richard Groomes.
